B1G Roundtable - Regular Season Week #9

Sorry, crazy week so I apologize for not getting this up earlier.

Post your predictions in this thread before the first Big 10 game each week and keep track of your W-L record.

We did a lot of analysis in the off-season should you ever feel the need to peruse our more ridiculous predictions (both these links contain the links to all the individual roundtables):

    Regular Season Roundtable Overview

In addition to the Pick'em, we'll do the usual question about injuries and then get to an "opinion" topic where you can wax poetic.

    1. What's your team's updated injury situation?

    2. Opinion Question of the week: Name the breakout star from your offense and defense thus far.

As I said above, I thought it would be fun to do a "Pick'em" during the season. Basically just choose the winners of each Big 10 game straight up (I'm not a bookie here) and keep track of your W-L record. I don't mind if folks jump in mid-season, but I do ask that you pick all the Big 10 games each week.

    The Week 9 Schedule

    Saturday

    12:00 p.m. - Northwestern @Iowa
    12:00 p.m. - #24 Nebraska @Minnesota
    3:30 p.m. - Michigan State @Illinois
    8:00 p.m. - Penn State @Ohio State

BYE - Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue

General Notice: The Roundtable is open to all Big 10 fans and is meant to be informational and civil. This is NOT a chance to flame your rival schools. Discussion and debate is encouraged; out and out baiting and trolling is not what this is about.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • There we go.. woot

Injury situation: J Jones still out- probably won't be back til the Neb game. DT Tyler Hoover, WRs Bennie Fowler and AB and OL Blake Treadwell are all ? for this week, but none are season threatening.

Star on O: To date, I'd say Langford. RS JR RB finally is living up to his potential. Defense I think it's Hoover. Dude is playing with a force this year

    54-10 on the season-
    11-1 Week 1
    9-3 Week 2
    9-3 Week 3
    9-1 Week 4
    3-1 Week 5
    5-0 Week 6
    4-0 Week 7
    4-1 Week 8

    Northwestern
    Nebraska
    MSU
    OSU

    Michigan is terrible lulz

  • Injuries,
Lost 1st time starter on the OL Burzynski with an ACL injury. True freshman Bosch replaced him and played well, it was Indiana though.
WR Dileo went out against Indiana, haven't heard anymore and I expect he will be good to go next week.

    Breakout on offense,
WR/TE Funchess. 23 receptionsfor 492 yards and 4 TDs. 5th in the B1G in receiving yards per game, only underclassman in the top 10 in that category.

    Others,
OL Graham Glasgow, former walk on who has started all 7 games at either LG or Center.
WR Jeremy Gallon, 45 receptions for 831 yards and 7 TDs. Leads the conference in receiving yards per game and is second in receptions per game. I believe that the 7 receiving TDs is tied for 1st in the league.
Devin Gardner, 1,779 yards passing with 13 TDs and a 61.1% completion percentage. QB rating of 159.9. Also has 520 yards rushing and 9 more TDs. The QB rating leads the conference among full time starters.

Defense breakout, DL Black, DE Clark, LB Ross and S Wilson have been solid but I will go with CB Countess coming back from the ACL injury and his 4 INTs.

I believe I was 4-1 last week and am 54-10 on the year.

    This weeks picks,
    Nebraska over Minnesota
    Iowa over Northwestern
    MSU over Illinois
    OSU over PSU

4-1 last week, 46-14 on the year.

Nebraska over Minny - too much speed for the 'Husker O for the gophers to contain

Iowa over Northwestern - this could signal the death spiral for Northwestern's bowl chances, as they still have UM, Nebraska and MSU coming up

MSU over Illinois - Good O teams always make me nervous because I think they can get 14-20 points on the MSU D and the MSU O is not guaranteed to be able to reciprocate.

OSU over PSU - Good job by PSU vs. UM and great time for a bye, but tOSU is not a team that's going to succumb to a depleted roster.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Husker checking in:

    Injuries:
    - Starting QB, Taylor Martinez (turf toe) will likely make an appearance against Minnesota. Probably won't play for much more than a quarter
    - Starting WR, Jamal Turner (hamstring) sounds healthy
    - Starting TE, Jake Long (hamstring) likely out for another week or two
    - All-American OL, Spencer Long out for the season (old news)

    Offensive Breakout: Quincy Enunwa
    - He's been a starter for a while now but this year he's on a whole different level. He's a powerful WR with moves to spare. He's got more receiving TDs per game than anyone in the Big Ten right now

    Defensive Breakout: Randy Gregory
    - Randy is in his first year at Nebraska, coming in as a JUCO with 3 years to play. He's a long, quick DE that needs to be accounted for on every play. He's noticeably improved in every game and will be a household name in Big Ten territory soon

Kind of crazy that Gregory was a low 3-star recruit committed to Purdue. Makes him a good poster child for how the "star" system can't predict development. Basically the rating services got a second crack at Gregory once he was in JUCO and he ended up a mid 4-star as a result.

Sad for the Boilermakers though, because he'd be a great JACK DE/OLB for them. They've got a stud DT in Gaston, but are missing that outside presence.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    Here's a thought:

Does Northwestern make a bowl? They need 2 more wins. If they lose to Iowa, they have to beat one of Nebraska, MSU, or UM, and they finish with Illinois, which looks like they're no longer a pushover.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I think wisky and OSU games back to back killed them. Along with the injury to Mark and colter. I think they don't make a bowl.

If they can get Colter and Mark back healthy, they will be dangerous again. They barely lost to OSU and had a chance to win except for an "unusual" spot by the refs at the end of the game. But without Colter and Mark (Colter especially), they're a very different team.
