Fall camp is here! Lets get our predictions in now. Please predict overall record, and Big Ten records for each team. Maybe write up a summary talking about the big games and how they will play out.

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

Here we go: Big props to Dix Steele for giving us a template with all the schedules' to begin with. I'm high on the Illini and Hawkeyes, and down on PSU and Michigan (shocking, I know). Schedule has a ton to do with it; if Iowa were to play Wisconsin or Ohio State this year during the regular season, I'd predict an L against both, but they have Indiana and Purdue from the Leader's division.

Penn State's game against Alabama is going to have some lasting effects. I really think the physical toll of that early game is going to affect their season. If their OL doesn't step up, there could be some major injuries. Speaking from (relatively) personal experience; I watched Alabama knock MSU's top 2 QBs out of the bowl game and PSU's biggest ? is the OL and QBs. Not what you like to hear going into a week 2 game vs. the #2 team in the country, especially one that's known best for it's fearsome front 7.

I doubt Minnesota actually gos 0-8, but I can't find a game I like; if the Purdue game was @ Minny, I'd probably give it to the Gophers. Starting the year @USC presents similar problems as PSU vs. Bama does, except Minny doesn't have close to the level of talent as PSU.

    ILLINOIS

    9/3 Arkansas State W 45-10
    9/10 So. Dakota State W 38-14
9/17 Arizona State W 27-20 (I really like IL at home this year and think ASU is getting a tad over-hyped. After 2 cupcakes, IL should be 100% healthy, plus West Coast teams do not fare well coming east)
    9/24 Western Michigan W 35-14
10/1 Northwestern W 24-17 (Persa's not back in the swing of things quite yet)
    10/8 @Indiana W 31 -6
10/15 Ohio State L 14-30 (tOSU will be coming off games vs. MSU and Nebraska, should be fiesty after dropping 1 of those 2)
10/22 @Purdue L 20-28 (Purdue could surprise and I think IL will be a tad beat up after tOSU)
10/29 @ Penn State L 10-30 (PSU gets revenge for last year's embarassment)
11/12 Michigan W 31-28 (Tough game for both teams, IL home edge gets the W and guarantees 2nd straight bowl)
11/19 Wisconsin L 20-38 (Too much beef up front for Wisky)
    11/26 @Minnesota W 26-7

    8-4 (4-4)

    INDIANA

    9/3 @ Ball State W 31-21
    9/10 Virginia L 7 - 30
    9/17 South Carolina State W 34-17
    9/24 @ North Texas W 27-17
    10/1 Penn State L 7 - 31
    10/8 Illinois L 6-31
    10/15 @Wisconsin L 21 - 45
    10/22 @ Iowa L 17-27
    10/29 Northwestern W 21-20 (Best shot at a conference W after a brutal start)
    11/5 @ Ohio State L 6 - 42
11/19 @ Michigan State L 14-38 (Old Brass Spittoon stays in EL)
    11/26 Purdue W 27-24 (Wilson gets a rivalry W to give the IU faithful Hope .. . . . 's head on a silver platter)

    4-8 (2-6)

    IOWA

    9/3 Tennessee Tech W 27-0
    9/10 @ Iowa State W 28-14
    9/17 Pittsburgh W 22-16
    9/24 ULM W 42-7
    10/8 @ Penn State W 28-20 (Iowa has PSU's #, just like Northwestern has Iowa's #)
    10/15 Northwestern L 20-24 (See above)
    10/22 Indiana W 27-17
10/29 @ Minnesota W 31-24 (I really think Marquise Gray can be a headache this season, but Minny's D is going to be atrocious)
    11/5 Michigan W 34-17
11/12 Michigan State W 21-13 (MSU hasn't beaten Iowa at Kinnick since '89. State will be just 1 game removed from the UM-Wisky-@NU stretch. Last season, MSU came into this game tired and beat up, and was run out of the stadium. An earlier bye should make the game more competitive, but the final result is still a Hawkeye W).
    11/19 @Purdue W 27-14
11/25 @Nebraska L 21-6 (Iowa's weak schedule catches up to them and their O is stifled by a ridiculously tough Nebraska defense)

    10-2 (6-2)

    MICHIGAN

    9/3 Western Michigan W 37-13
9/10 Notre Dame L 31-17 (Night game won't stop a non-suspended Michael Floyd. Or Manti Te'o. Too much Irish firepower for a new-look UM D and O. Not having a P is going to be a problem)
    9/17 Eastern Michigan W 42-12
    9/24 San Diego State W 28-24
    10/1 Minnesota W 34-24
    10/8 @Northwestern W 31-27
10/15 @ Michigan State L 3-49 (I think MSU will win, so I had fun with the score. It's the inverse of the 2002 game, where UM took zero pity on a dysfunctional MSU team.)
    10/29 Purdue W 35-21
    11/5 @ Iowa L 17-34
    11/12 @ Illinois L 28-31
11/19 Nebraska L 14-31 (Nebraska's DL and Peso scheme are the perfect solution to a running QB who's being asked to move the ball through the air)
11/26 Ohio State L 17-38 (Minimal sanctions for tOSU means a possible CCG berth on the line for one of these schools)

    6-6 (3-5)

    MICHIGAN STATE

    9/3 Youngstown State W 45-7
    9/10 FAU W 38-6
9/17 @ Notre Dame L 27-31 (Floyd is the only WR I see being able to get behind MSU's D, and that opens up the rest of ND's O. Game could go either way, but road games vs. top 25 opponents are pretty much Ls for MSU until proven otherwise . . . or a change in circumstances like tOSU in game 5)
    9/24 Central Michigan W 27-10
10/1 @ Ohio State W 23-20 (If there's ever a time for MSU to win @C-bus, this is it. MSU's DEs should give them the edge vs. a new LT/QB combo. Should be a fantastic game)
10/15 Michigan W 49-3 (Home game after a bye against Public Enemy #1, where MSU enjoys advantages across the board)
10/22 Wisconsin W 31 - 24 (First conf. road game for Wisconsin. Seriously. Should be another slobber-knocker; both Beilema and Dantonio are 2-0 against each other at home)
10/29 @ Nebraska L 20 -28 (MSU starts to run out of gas after 2 big, emotional games, especially vs. Wisky's powerful OL. Nebraska's DL is too much for MSU's OL)
    11/5 Minnesota W 34-17
11/12 @ Iowa L 13-21 (last of a tough stretch of road games, MSU should fight hard, but is too exhausted, especially compared to an Iowa team that hasn't faced a challenge since early Oct.)
    11/19 Indiana W 38-14
11/26 @ Northwestern W 34-17 (MSU is 3-1 vs. NU under Dantonio, with the only loss coming in OT in 2007. MSU seems to have NU's # and will be playing for a shot at the CCG, dependent on how other games finish)

    9-3 (6-2)

    MINNESOTA

    9/3 @ USC L 12-45
    9/10 New Mexico State W 17-14
    9/17 Miami-OH L 17-20
    9/24 North Dakota State W 31-16
    10/1 @ Michigan L 24-34
    10/8 @ Purdue L 35-38
    10/22 Nebraska L 0 - 38
    10/29 Iowa L 24-31
    11/5 @ Michigan State L 17-34
    11/12 Wisconsin L 21-41
    11/19 @ Northwestern L 20-27
    11/26 Illinois L 7-26

    2-10 (0-8)

    NEBRASKA

    9/3 Chattanooga W 55-0
    9/10 Fresno State W 31-7
    9/17 Washington W 27-0
    9/24 @ Wyoming W 37-6
10/1 @ Wisconsin L 17-28 (All about the run-game. Nebraska doesn't face many power-run teams, and was carved up by Washington's Chris Polk in the bowl game. No offense to Polk, but Ball/White are individually much better, running behind a superior OL. That does not bode well for NU. Wisconsin has lost a total of 4 home games in the past 6 years confused)
10/8 Ohio State L 17-10 (Tough game, but tOSU is going to get a huge morale boost with Posey, etc. coming back. tOSU special teams are the difference, as this pits weakness vs. strength for both teams: Strong Ds going up against weak Os)
    10/22 @ Minnesota W 38-0
10/29 Michigan State W 21 -20 (This game determines the Legends title, even if the teams don't know it for sure at the time. NU gets "BYE, @Minny", while MSU gets UM and Wisky at home in the 2 weeks prior. Big advantage to NU. On a neutral field, I believe these 2 teams are dead even if 100% healthy. Bet is that NU will be close to healthy, and MSU will not be).
    11/5 Northwestern W 38-6 (Nebraska's "Peso" exists to neutralize pass-first spread O's. Perfect match-up for the Blackshirts)
    11/12 @ Penn State W 31-24
    11/19 @ Michigan W 31-14
    11/25 Iowa W 21-6

    10-2 (6-2)

    NORTHWESTERN

9/3 @ Boston College L 14-21 (BC's D is one of the nation's best; I'm predicting Persa to be rust the first 6 games, and an early bye means 9 straight games to close the year)
    9/10 Eastern Illinois W 38 - 37
    9/17 @Army W 44-20
    10/1 @ Illinois L 17-24
    10/8 Michigan L 27-31
    10/15 @Iowa W 24-20 (Explained above: Northwestern has Iowa's #)
    10/22 Penn State L 17 - 30
    10/29 @ Indiana L 20-21
    11/5 @ Nebraska L 6-38
    11/12 Rice W 35-17
    11/19 Minnesota W 27-20
    11/26 Michigan State L 17-34

    5-7 (2-6)

    OHIO STATE

    9/3 Akron W 38-6
    9/10 Toledo W 42 - 7
9/17 @ Miami-FL W 31-20 (last time I checked, Jacory Harris was still the QB at Miami. That's worth at least 2 INTs and likely one returned for a TD)
    9/24 Colorado W 35-13
10/1 Michigan State L 20-23 (Going to be a tough game with a pair of strong DLs. MSU's experience at QB and K should be the difference)
10/8 @ Nebraska W 17-10 (Tatooed 4 return, and there was much rejoicing)
    10/15 @ Illinois W 30-14
10/29 Wisconsin L 20-30 (Similar game to last year)
    11/5 Indiana W 42-6
11/12 @ Purdue W 28-20 (Trap game looking ahead to PSU)
    11/19 Penn State W 17-10
    11/26 @ Michigan W 38-17 (New coaches, same results)

    10-2 (6-2)

    PENN STATE

    9/3 Indiana State W 49-3
9/10 Alabama L 35-7 (Bama is too fast, too physical and it's too early in the season for PSU's OL and QBs to get comfortable.)
9/17 @ Temple W 28-7 (Temple, with a new HC, is the perfect solution to the Alabama problem
9/24 Eastern Michigan W 49-6 (Joe Pa has never been one to take his foot off the gas)
    10/1 @ Indiana W 31-7
10/8 Iowa L 20-28 (Iowa has PSU's #, no matter where the game is played)
    10/15 Purdue W 17-10
    10/22 @ Northwestern W 30-17
    10/29 Illinois W 30-10
    11/12 Nebraska L 24-31
11/19 @ OSU L 10-17 (These games are always close, defensive affairs)
11/26 @ Wisconsin L 14-38 (3rd straight tough game, 2nd straight tough road game, just too much to ask for a young QB)

    7-5 (4-4)

    PURDUE

    WISCONSIN

    9/1 UNLV W 31-17
    9/10 Oregon State W 35-20
    9/17 @ Soldier Field vs. Northern Illinois W 42-17
    9/24 South Dakota W 63-3
10/1 Nebraska W 28-17 (Night game in Madison + powerful OL = perfect storm to sink Nebraska's conference debut)
    10/15 Indiana W 45-21
10/22 @ Michigan State L 24-31 (Again, first conf. road game)
    10/29 @ Ohio State W 30-20

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    2. Steve, could you clarify? Do you want us each to do EVERY team's schedule/record, or just the team we represent? Just sayin, cause I could do all 12, but my post wouldn't be done for another 3 hours lol

Every team, predict the standings and the record. Perhaps comment on some big games like why you picked one team to beat another. A short summary maybe of who each team lost to and why if it's a swing game.

  • Steele, you have PSU beating Bama but going 3-5 in conference? I can't see us doing any worse than 5-3 in conference if we're good enough to beat Alabama. That being said, I don't see the latter condition coming true, so it's a moot point.

Also, I think you're way underestimating OSU. As much as I hate to say it, they're still very good with a whole lot of talent. I can't see them going 6-6. And I won't say anything about the pick of Iowa somehow going 11-1..

Great question, Steve, and I'm excited to see what everyone has to say

My hunch says McGloin gets the starts in Week 1 (any update on this?) He plays lights out against the Tide at home. Season-changing win.

Unfortunately he will get injured at the end of the Indiana game and Bolden will pick up from where he left off last year (Which isn't saying much) You go through 2011 with a QB identity crisis as McGloin heals between Neb and OSU games.

FWIW, Dix just lined up Iowa's 2002 season with 2011 and used the exact same scores. The rest of his predictions go from there. He posted this on our board like 6 weeks ago or something.

That's why he has Iowa at 11-1 . . . with an L to Pitt (to mimic their L to Iowa State that year in game #3).

This post was edited by MalibuMan 3 years ago

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • And Iowa losing to Pitt but running the bigten just isn't going to happen

Most indications point to Bolden starting from Week 1. I also think we'd have zero chance of beating Bama with McGloin at the helm. Bama's secondary would pick him on every other pass.

BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Wisconsin VS. MSU

    Top Games

    1. Nebraska at Wisconsin - This is Nebraska's first conference game, and it is a night game in one of the tougher venues in the big ten. Regardless of how I think the season will turn out the hype meter will be high coming into this game, as it should considering on paper this may determine the Big Ten champ. or least pave the way. Ultimately i think that the gap between Offenses is greater than the gap between defenses and the home team takes this one. Wisconsin 28 Nebraska 13. Let the Wisconsin hype machine start rolling until it smacks us in the face.

    2. Wisconsin at Ohio St. - I expect Wisconsin to flying high at 7-0 and thinking their sh!t doesn't stink. Adding to that is the fact that we are one of the few teams in the conference that have had some success against Ohio St. even on the road. Ohio St reminds us that our sh!t can stink. The have everyone back at this point and have figured out who they are. I am guessing the new coach will look at last years film and coach all week on how to do the opposite. They still have talent and are at home. There isn't a game on Wisconsin's schedule that I think they can't win, but I know they won't win them all. OSU 24 Wisconsin 21

    3. Michigan St at Ohio St. - This is a game everyone is looking to as timing is everything. MSU will know a lot more about their OL and they are catching OSU at a good time. Regardless of missing players they will still most likely be starting a freshman QB early in the year with a first year head coach. I think in terms of athleticism MSU matches up very well and the experienced play of Kirk Cousins is going to help them pull this one out on the road. MSU 27 OSU 17

    4 and 5 are a tossup between;
-Wisconsin @ MSU which could be part 1 eventhough it is part 2 from last season.
-Penn St. @ OSU as this could be where OSU thinks they are going to sneak away with another crown, but not so fast my friend. BTW I just realized they get Wisconsin, MSU, and PSU all at home.

And Iowa losing to Pitt but running the bigten just isn't going to happen

Why? You saw similar situations in '02, 04 and '09.

Iowa always tanks a game they shouldn't have early in the season but then gets its act together. With everyone focusing on MSU, Neb and even NW in our division, I expect the Hawks to sneak up on everyone. Rocky will be the first one to say the schedule is very favorable.

Precedence is there, so why not?

  • This should be another lively week for this thread.

Let's see some more predictions, so we can rip on all the other ones besides Steele's.

Trust us, Bolden has a clear edge in the battle at worst. Letting them both practice with the 1's doesn't mean the decision hasn't been made already.

Thanks for the update. I hadn't been following PSU that much this offseason, and having been very impressed everytime I saw McGloin last year, I just assumed it was an uphill battle for Bolden.

I take it you didn't watch the bowl game. Or the first 55 mins of the MSU game. Or the second half of OSU game. He was possibly the worst player on the field during those moments. The last 5 mins of the MSU game wouldn't have mattered if MSU doesn't completely lose all focus.

    signature image

    #DicedPineapples

  • And to clarify, I don't have a vendetta against Mcgloin. I think Bolden was pretty awful when he played at moments too. Both QB's clearly had a long way to go and I couldn't care less who starts, as long as the starter is the guy who brings PSU the best chance to win. Some on our boards love one and hate the other as a player - I don't understand that, it's not like either QB was head and shoulders above the other last year. I do understand disdain for the attitudes of both players at points, but people have taken it way too far on PSU boards.

Anyway, hope the best one wins; all signs point to RoBo.

That's similar to the way I felt after watching Bolden play in Iowa City last year.

PS: I missed your bowl and MSU games last year.

  • Aside from Michigan and a few schools, the overall records are almost complete guesses with no significant game by game analysis:

    Nebraska 9-3 (5-3)
    Michigan State 8-4 (5-3)

Me too. Both QB's have a long way to go. Bolden looked bad as well. The good thing is, there is a good deal of potential for growth at that position and that will ultimately swing the fates of our season either way.

Side note, you honestly see Iowa hanging 42 on PSU? PSU's defense was down last year, but they were hampered with injuries. Consensus is PSU is stronger in all three defensive facets of the game. I also don't see PSU scoring 35 on Iowa at all. I would be beyond shocked if there are anywhere close to 77 combined points in that game.

Not really, it's just a rehash of the 2002 score between Iowa/PSU. I see a lot of similarities between that team and this one. So call it an homage.
