Did you just suggest that Michigan's secondary and overall defense are better than VT and Bama?
Are you on medication? Michigan is a legitimate threat for Hand IMO, but your stated arguments are counterproductive to your cause.
Don't believe 'Bama is a serious contender at this point and with the way UM has recruited in the last 2 years, by the time Hand takes the field and gets a chance to play for a couple of seasons, yes, I believe UM's defense will be stronger than VT's, in both the secondary and along the DL.
We usually had a top 10 D with 2 and 3 stars on the DL and Secondary. Last season we got a 5 star CB, high 4 star Safety, 4 star CB and 4 star DL. I'd take those with Bud Foster and Torrian Gray over your recruits and coaching. Not to mention we'll get at least 3 4 star DL this year, along with 2 more 4 star DBs.
Greg Mattison > Bud Foster
Weird, considering Michigan finished above Va Tech in total defense, passing defense and scoring defense last year.

Well, you make a valid point, as stars don't necessarily translate to production on the field and I agree that Bud Foster is a very good coach. However, Greg Mattison has proven to be a superior DC, achieving a dramatic turnaround in the last 2 seasons with RichRod recruits that, frankly, were terrible while Greg Robinson was still there. Now he's getting a heavy dose of 4 star athletes (plus at least one 5 star, so far, in Jabrill Peppers) to work with which, again, doesn't prove anything...but I have to admit, I like where things are headed. Last year UM finished 13th in overall D...VT was a very respectable 18th. Michigan played 'Bama, South Carolina, ND and Ohio State, all on the road, suffering a "beat down" in the 1st game of the season against Alabama. However, the other three games, Michigan could have won, except for a turn-over here and there, and they should have. However, that's last year and we're expressing our opinions (you know what they compare those to, as everybody has one) about what the future holds. Perhaps our teams will meet again in the Sugar Bowl and you'll get the chance to prove me wrong. Good luck this year.
Oh and I forgot to mention the Nebraska game in Lincoln, when Denard Robinson went down with a nerve injury to his throwing hand and UM had to bring in a backup QB (Belomy) who threw 4 interceptions...not great.

Hey now, don't let facts get in the way of a good angry rant.
You stole my post +1
And it is not like the ACC is loaded with top offenses either but Bud gets more out of kids than most coaches in the nation.
Agree to disagree.
Weird we played the #6, #11 and #14 ranked scoring offenses last year.
Good thing last years defense = 2 years from now like the poster was talking about.
VT total defense under Bud
2004 - #4
2005 - #1
2006 - #1
2007 - #4
2008 - #7
2009 - #12
2011 - #10
2012 - #18
I'd say there are 3 or 4 D-Coordinators better than Bud and Mattison ain't one of them.
Don't forget that Bud's defense held Michigan to under 200 yards in the Sugar Bowl and VT had just under 400 yards of offense.
You know, I can't remember...who won that game? Was it Virginia Tech?
Yep, but only 1 stat counts...points at the end.
The refs won bro, the refs won.
TBH, my wallet won. So many bets with bitter Spartans who believed Michigan would get crushed if they made it to a BCS bowl.
1) a good D-line makes the secondary's life easier, not as much the other way around
2) don't like VT but you can't argue that Bud Foster is one of the best DCs out there
3) Hand may sign with Michigan, but if he does, it's not because Michigan has recently signed players that may have been slightly more highly ranked than VT's by a website, to think that's really a factor is laughable
1) Ehhhhh...ever heard the term "coverage sack"? A good secondary helps the DL make up for any missteps or struggle with getting past decent OLs. They also allow the DL more freedom to go for plays in the backfield if they can be relied on to shed WR blockers on run plays.
Pick, choose, and construct all you want. My point is it doesn't require being "on medication" to recognize Michigan has played just as good if not better D than Va Tech recently. I think Foster is a great coach. I think Mattison is as well.
As for the second part of your post, whatever you say. Mattison has been fantastic for the M defense the last two years and I'm not sure what edge you think VT has when extrapolating for 2014. Even with Fuller, I doubt you want to go recruiting scoreboard. Honestly, what are you saying?
I don't disagree with what you're saying, as good pressure results in hurried throws and more interceptions. However, if a receiver isn't open, then a college quarterback is more likely to hold the ball than an NFL QB, while waiting (hoping) for someone to open up, allowing the DL a few more milli-seconds to converge. Let's face it, they both scratch one anothers' backs, working in tandem on every play. My point is, quality players recognize and like to play with other quality players and if you have a solid secondary with at least one, if not two, shut down corners, and are playing with other 4 star players along the D-Line, they can't just double team you every play, which opens things up for you. Hand has demonstrated that he's highly intelligent and motivated to get into the League and I believe he'll factor all of the things mentioned previously into his decision making process. Including Mattison and his staff and the academics available at UM. Again guys, just one man's opinion.
That's not my point though. You guys won the game, but it was not because of our defense. Your defense played bend but don't break in the game, playing very well in the redzone. But our offense has always been our Achilles heel, especially our redzone offense the last two years. Michigan's offense in 2011 was ranked 26 in scoring offense, 42 in total offense, and 13th in rushing offense. VT's offense in 2011 was ranked 57, 35 in total offense, and 28th in rushing offense. Somewhat even, with an edge to Michigan IMO, but VT's defense held Michigan in check, but special teams and poor offense lost the game for VT.
Check the resume.
You can agree to disagree, but that would just make your opinion wrong.
Keep in mind that was Mattison's first year, and that was one year after having the worst defence in Michigan history.
Foster is a great coach, Mattison is a better one. Hard to admit as a Hokie fan, but it's the truth.
