Finished a few hours ago as well. I wouldn't even call it decent...
It took me over a year to finish that book because I would get bored then have to go back to it later. I don't think anyone was ever thrilled about that one book on the series.
One of my friends told me it was her favorite before I started. I will no longer trust her judgment.
HER being the key word. Probably liked it because of that cunt Cersei is in it the majority of the time.
Might be. There is a heavy female focus in the book (trying to avoid giving anything away, as per the OP). My problem was just that the story was boring. The male chapters were just as boring as the female. Chopping the fourth into one set of characters and the fifth into another is just stupid, especially when the majority of the well liked characters with better storylines all fall into only one book.

Yeah. Basically it's 900 or so pages of travelling and characters bitching about their situations.
ADWD is astronomically better.
HER not being the key word. I hated that book and I loved the series.. Apparently his friend just happens to be female AND have bad taste in books.....it happens.
It was missing most of my favorite characters. Once I got going the book was okay. I still think it is easily the weakest book in the series. Still a really good book by most standards.
I was not a fan of that book. It took every ounce of will power I had to finish and I put it down several times.....I never put a book down. I mulled through it because I love the series and knew that it was setting up for the next book.
Daenerys is one of my favorite characters. I love her, Tyrion, and Jon Snow for the same reasons....they imo grow the most of all the characters.
It reveals a lot of the history and backstory. I still enjoyed it, but I can see how casual readers might not like it.
This is where the books and the show start to separate......the character development.
Yeah I've never got around to reading those either. Might have to pick them up at some point this summer.
That is an unfortunate problem - Peter Dinklage plays Tyrion absolutely perfectly, but they just don't make him as ugly as Tyrion is in the books. I don't lay any of the blame at Dinklage's feet, it's just a creative choice by producers who probably figure that it'd turn viewers off if the characters looked as ugly as they're sometimes described in the books.
Brienne is not nearly as hideous as I imagined her either.

And Asha was much more unattractive than I pictured.
Same here. She is hideous on the show.
She is....and considering how much power she wielded over men in the books. Very puzzling. It would have made for a better story line if they would have made her attractive and a hardass, like she was portrayed in the books.
Who is everyone's favorite characters? I've read the first 4 books, and Arya has been my favorite since the beginning.
This. Would not smash.
Tyrion and Jon Snow.
A question for those who are much more knowledgeable than me on this show: Is it possible that Aria's dancing master is the same guy that helped them escape through the front door y killing the guards and he just changed his face again? Am I just way off here? If I am, does the dancing master ever make a return? Or did he die up in that castle somewhere. "What do we say to the God of Death?"

Yeah thats a pretty popular theory that I don't think has ever been disproven.
I don't have the quotes infront of me, but on the show he seems to say the same things as the dancing guy. I think they are from the same area too. But I'll take everyone just not calling me an idiot for that thought and call it a day. lol It's just been bugging me a little

Yeah, IIRC Syrio and Jaquen were both from Braavos.
