Just to give some perspective, here is a list of guys who, since 2000, were basically 1st year starters (a relative term, I know) going into the season but wound up in the Heisman top-5 by the end of the season. As you can see, it happens most years.

So one of two things seems to be true of guys who come out of nowhere to end up in the top 5. Either they're transcendent talents, or they're senior QBs (Banks, Robinson).
