In your area to buy a nice/adequate house? How many rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and whatever you think is necessary?
I live in Northern Illinois and the number during the current economy is about 180,000. 4 bedrooms, 2+baths and 2+ car garage

I dream of a day when chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.
3br and 2 bath to buy in my area of downtown Charleston could easily run 250-500 depending on if it's been remodeled in the last 200yrs. Get off the peninsula and you can get a 3br 2bath from 185-215.
At least 500k
4 bedrooms, 2 car garage, 2 bath, decent living space, deck... About 18 million give or take.
180G would get me a 150 sq ft 15th floor walk up with no heat or water. And AIDS or typhus probably.
4 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage is 800k here.
Yeah, I'm 19.
Ok, you guys have got to say where at if you are gonna put these high azz numbers, curiosity is killing me
$350,000 or so in Naples Florida for a 3br 2bath in a nice school district (house I lived in before college)
Housing prices in the northeast are CRAZY. I remember when my ex and I built our house 20 years ago....it was a 6 Bdrm/ 5.5 bath house with a full, finished basement and we spent around 500K for it (in Alpharetta..metro Atlanta). His cousin bought a much smaller house on Long Island and spent 1.5M.
My area is North Jersey
Yup. It's insane. Quite literally insane.
I know Chicago (45 mins away is quite a bit higher, but I don't think it's that much)
Toronto, in a nice neighbourhood you're looking at least a million.
But it really depends on what you consider "nice".
"Nice" for a young couple? You can get one for around 600 probably, but not as nice area, and not as big or new.
"Nice" for someone in the middle class, with a family; probably 1.3, 1.4 mill.
Great area. 400 and up for 3-4 bedroom.
My rent would make you puke. Makes me physically ill every time I throw another check down the drain. But to buy my apt I'd have to throw down 2.5 minimum.
Actually, I don't even know anymore what I'd have to pay. I was quoted that almost a year ago. Seems like the market goes up every week. It's soul crushing.
Alpharetta, now, is like 850K easy
That's not in all areas of Alpharetta
4 Bedroom 3 Bath 2600 sq ft cost about 450k in Greenville. If you want 3 bedroom 2 Bath for 1600 sq ft will cost you about 325k. That is in a good area in Greenville.
My son's message to Obama, Clemson, and Georgia
I'm in escrow now for a nice area of Los Angeles. 699k 3 bed, 2 bath with hardly any backyard
1600 sq ft

What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome.--Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
You can get that in Tuscaloosa, but it's a shoebox. If you want a 4/2 in a nice neighborhood in one of the top 2 school districts, you're gonna start around $260 and go up to $500ish, depending on the hood. But yeah, you can find several neighborhoods with cheap built specs in mediocre areas for 150 ish. (and there's nothing wrong with living there...just assuming most people are school zone concious)
Don't think south, but right across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Just got back from Baltimore last weekend (assuming you're talking about Baltimore city limits in a nice hood). Our friends live out in Ellicott City in a pretty nice little neighborhood. I was surprised that the prices weren't so outrageous in there, but it's not right in town either.
Yeah, the whole thread will be subjective because of it. I can survive most anywhere, but my wife is picky as hell. We've considered moving to Lexington Downs, but math genius that she is, she doesn't understand why moving the same equity from our current, cheaper house that allows for a low mortgage, to a house there doesn't equate to a similar mortgage.
I try to teach her about interest/taxes/insurance and basic math, but I usually end up yelling and having to buy her something later to make it up. Then we're 1 more month from moving to Lexington Downs.
..... I laffed cause I understand
Santa Clara is south I think
I live in Ellicott City. It depends entirely on where you live in the county, but there are some parts that are unbelievably expensive(like 7 figures for a single family home) towards Columbia.
