He died from cancer today. He was always good for a great soundbite/quote.

Time to celebrate and throw a helluva bender!
Didn't he go to Cuba for treatment at one time??? If he did, guess they weren't that great.
His personality cult and chavismo are only going to result in someone similar to him getting elected. Could in fact be someone worse tbh.
I bet sean penn did not sleep a wink

One dictator down... Only a hundo more to go
In fact ...
said Penn of Chavez, who lost his cancer battle at age 58
"Sean Penn and other Hollywood stars are grieving the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, whose death at age 58 was announced on Tuesday, March 5."
Ridiculous, isn't it? Guy was an absolute tyrant.

Those of you (like me) who thought of Chavez as a despot need to read this article. It's very interesting and points out that election monitors saw Venezuela’s elections as some of the most transparent in the world (he won elections by wide margins 14 times), and there were not any political prisoner's in Venezuela (as I had been led to believe) other than those who had tried to overthrow the democratically elected government (7 total). He did use the state run media to harrass his political opposition, and he made friends with some of the worst dictators in the world. He wasn't the 2nd coming of Jesus like Mr. Penn might believe but he wasn't Stalin either. Like most things in life, if the answer is "plain and simple", the person giving that answer to you is probably either simple minded or self-servingly obtuse. His power, like Castro's, was probably due more to our ham fisted attempts to get rid of him than to anything he did to help his people.

I remember that guy
The company I work for won a settlement against him in International court, when he took over the Oil/Gas wells to make them state run.
He was Saddam-lite.
No, he wasn't. Re-read my post, I've changed it in lite of new information. He was a strongman who did all he could to remove any barriers to the practice of his power but he wasn't a psychopathic mass murderer and he wasn't waging pre-emptive wars with his neighbors. He won legitimate elections by a wide margin 14 times. We all (myself included) want easy to understand answers that paint people as either saints or devils but the truth is almost always more complex than that. I don't particularly care for him as a person but to compare him to despots like Stalin or Sadam is misguided and incorrect. I admittedly did that in my prior post and was wrong in doing so.
Where people can draw conclusions are that he was ruthless in suppressing opposition, through the use of media, the state run television always painted the opposition as well not things that can be said. He also took over and created many state run businnesses. However, what should be noted is that prior to his election, Venezuela was often abused and taken advantage of by foreign countries through the use of capital and those very businesses. When you have the money, you call the shots. The guy was paranoid no doubt, and had to remove all barriers and ways that his admitted opponents (USA) would use to overthrow him. Simple logic really, but for his benefit, he wasn't genociding people, in fact his power base is actually the lower classes.
Haha the Nation? You just ate up that socialist propaganda, didn't you? I don't think you could have quoted a more biased source unless you went for the Venezualan state run media.
Bump if you dislike Sean Penn as much as I do... god that guy is a terd... and who will give Shakira (Ms. Booty) autographed guitars now??
If he wasn't a despot, why did he fight to amend the Constitution to allow him to be elected for the rest of his life?
He put all media outlets that opposed him out of business, he would, for theatrics, wlak down the street point to certain properties and business and demand that they be nationalized, which they summarily were, he basically destroyed any semblance of the Rule of Law, and destroyed the country's already not so great economy and currency.
No he wasn't Stalin or Castro, but he was a piece of ****.
