a football scholarship to a basketball player who has never played varsity football, how would you feel/react?
Edit: I've linked the thread on the Arkansas board:
He committed to Coach Randy Shannon this morning. Now, he has to talk to Coach Bielema as will Coach Shannon and then it will be completely

Depends on the size and what position he was going to play. Saban would have a plan IMO
What about a first-year staff like Arkansas? Randy Shannon offered a kid today: 6'5" 220 lbs. He's never played varsity football... just a spring game. Wouldn't you wait to see how he plays in a live game during the season?
You always either trust your staff or go full on Nova
Translation: homer or realist
It's probably just a non-committable offer to get him to camp at Arkansas this summer. Smart play to get in first
btw he committed on the spot
I agree with this.
one would have to assume you wouldn't sign them to be a QB, but i could see the upside in taking a chance on a basketball athlete that has good size for certain positions.
it would definitely have its risks though....
bump for the edit in the OP
I get what your saying, but guys like that have a tremendous ceiling. There was a player in last years class named De'runnya Wilson (profile below) that I really wanted our staff to take. He was a basketball player too and was also a first year football player. He has a tremendous amount of potential, but he could also be a huge bust. Using one scholarship for a player with that amount of upside is not a big deal IMO. Sometimes it pays off to take a chance like that.
Jarret Stidham hasn't started at QB on varsity yet but Texas and a couple others have offered. He came to camp though and he's also #64 nationally in the class of 2015. I have no problems with it, as long as the coaches watch him in person.

That's how nova would explain it, why can't you just trust your coaches found a solid role player? I'm not saying you trust they found a star.
HUUUUUGE difference. This kid is a basketball player. He's not nationally ranked. He's a damn basketball player.
Dive for the thrill, shoot for the kill.
Arkansas' previous coaches:
Houston Nutt - nutty as squirrel shit, numerous lies, adulterer, Mustain and Gus Malzahn saga
Bobby Petrino - job hopper, liar, adulterer, motorcycle accident, lied to AD and fans
Now you expect me to trust my new staff after they've been here for just a few months?
lol oh man
Graham played collegiate basketball. We're talking about a high school kid from Miami who has only played in a spring game get offered and commit on the spot.
Not sure what that has to do with scouting, I wouldn't trust Petrino to babysit a pet hamster but if he offered a TE who'd never played before I'd say hell yeah hope "we" land him.
I would be pissed, I want them to see him play in a high school game before offering.
Oh well. Ya I could see that being pretty questionable.
Graham was recruited as a basketball player not a football player.
kid projects as a DE to the staff
I know this... but he was an average college player at best played 1 season and now is a breakout star at the next level... maybe this kid after 1 year of HS ball he could be a breakout player...
I know this... I'm just making a somewhat comaprision to a kid that will only be playing one season and becoming successful at the next level... albeit this is HS to College instead of College to NFL
Yea... I'm sure he could. But why are the staff taking chances like this instead of recruiting proven players? We're too terrible of a team to do this crap.
I mean he's a pretty big guy.. and if he plays b-ball I'm sure he's a good athlete..
