Nah. The discrimination faced by black people back then was far worse than that faced by gay people today. Especially in SEC country.
This is stupid.
Jackie Robinson didn't choose to be black...Collins chose to be gay.
So no, Jackie was dealt a bad hand during that time
That comparison is a slap in the face to black Americans. The discrimination against blacks in the mid twentieth century in this country was FAR worse than what gays experience today. Ask yourself, would you rather be gay athlete today, or black in the 1950s? The only group that had it worse were blacks pre civil war and native Americans.
I am not saying that being a gay pro athlete doesn't come without problems, but they are the minors compared to the major league adversity faced by Jackie Robinson.
Agreed. I'm glad that Jason came out. He should feel comfortable being who he is in 2013. But he's not Jackie Robinson or Rosa Parks (heard that one this morning too).
The cynic in me also wonders if there isn't at least a small amount of self serving motivation here. Collins is a mediocre, aging player that may be at the end of his career. He's also a very smart and eloquent man.....who just became uber-attractive to media outlets. You don't think ESPN or NBC Sports, etc would salivate at the chance to ink this guy if his playing days are over?
I can't help but wonder if that played a role here and if it did, good for him. Smart move.
That locked gay thread was pretty funny. Lots of people taking themselves too seriously. I lol'd when someone asked if Shaq had hit that yet. You crazy bigots are funny.
Wouldnt be the first time!
Why So Serious?
solid point... I was thinking the same thing.
Whether or not that played a role in his decision is not necessary to toss out the comparisons to Jackie Robinson.
1. Level of Discrimination: Blacks in the US in 1947 >>> Gays in the US today (even when we just look at the pro-sports sub-set)
2. While not good for your emotional well-being and a host of other bad things, you not required/mandated to let the world know you are gay. Jackie didn't have that option WRT to his characteristic that was discriminated against, his skin color (pretty obvious).
3. Jackie had to overcome his barrier to get into a sport, Jason has been in the NBA for 12 years.
4. JR had legitimate death threats against him and many of them. He was booed and heckled to some extent at every ball-park he played at. There might be an anti-gay sign or two at some of the arena's JC plays at, but the crowd as a whole nor the venue will not tolerate any large display.
Again, as far as comparison goes, this is a pretty big fail.
FU man. You can't tell me I can't choose to be gay. IDWIW.
I'm gay today. All day.
Agreed. Entirely different deal.
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are fueling the jet as we speak to protest this thread. Don't think the Collins and Robinson are remotely close to the same.
Will those jets have any terrorist stewardesses?
Only a Bama fan can post such ignorant shit. Jackie SURVIVED his trailblazing life. Jason will enjoy his.
I did smell coconut oil when I read your post
Rather be black... Wieners are gross
Dumbass comparison. Ray Bentley (former Bills LB, current sports talk show host) came close to going on a rant about it this morning.
Feels good man.
Now you and Bucky PM me some nood selfies. Tasteful ones. Not ready for hard core yet.
It's possible. But I have been reassured by tBB, that that type of thing does not happen. I've flown a million times(not a big fan) and never seen a FA look more nervous than me.
People do chose to be gay, just as the idiots decided to bomb the Boston Marathon. It was a choice, just like lying or committing adultery. Being gay is a chose. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Its a sin, just like everyone has done. God created the natural attraction between men and woman, we are born that way. Its a choice to change that attraction, as it is SCIENCE that proves every child is at different stages of an infancy is attracted to the opposite sex parent. So yes they do chose to be gay
My cheetah print thong is in the laundry. Sorry
Nice response..guess intelligence isn't your forte. Name a gay animal?
