He won three national championships while playing at Yale. He won five national championships while coaching at Yale (1) and USC (4). He also won 5 Rose Bowls (5-0). The man was a winner wherever he went, and deserves some consideration.
Remember, Rushmore doesn't have JFK, Reagan, Clinton, or Obama. It has the men who were foundational to the game in its youth.

that's weird, because Ohio st only won two AP titles during woody's tenure (54 & 68)

I know y'all hold a special place in your heart for the AP but yeah Woody has 5.
no, i can't give you credit for 1961, when OSU won somethings called FWAA, PS. but if you really want to, that's cool, because i just learned that OSU and usc split in 2002 of all years when usc won somethings called DuS, MGR, SR.
wow this is fun, i just learned that usc won in 76 and 79 too when i never thought that before.
and OSU doesn't get credit for 69 when they won something called MGR (i guess even this wasn't good enough for OSU to claim)
so i may have overlooked UPI. i'll grant you 3
and OSU doesn't get credit for 70 when they won something called NFF
We didn't win in 69.....or that would have given him 6. Congrats on new found success though...
woody - 3 NC's in 27 yrs at OSU
mckay - 4 NC's in 14 yrs at usc
Bud Wilkinson, Joe Paterno, Bear Bryant, and Knute Rockne.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
paterno's 2 NC's in 45 yrs at PSU ain't gonna cut the mustard to make rushmore, not to mention the sandusky affair
Fine, Bud Wilkinson, Eddie Robinson, Bear Bryant, and Knute Rockne.
yep plus Bobby won two national championships (1993 and 1999) and finished in the top five of the AP Poll for 14 straight years from 1987 through 2000. I didnt say he was the best but he deserves a spot on the rock
maybe if the rock had more spots..
yeah right whatever helps you sleep
So the basic consensus is Bear, Knute, best coach on your favorite team, and one other.
Scored 4 touchdowns...in a single game. Polk High!
You could argue plenty besides these 2 as they're both at Babe Ruth status in the coaching ranks. Candidates could be:
Steve Spurrier (don't forget this man won a conference title with DUKE!)
Nick Saban (if you take his current rate of success, add what is likely to happen over the next 8 years, and he's way up near the top)
Darrell Royal (his wishbone offense resulted in 2+ decades of option football dominating the landscape)
He changed Florida's offense. Not the SEC's teams. Ironically, at SC he runs the ball tons more than he ever has...wonder why?
Curious...why 8 more years for Saban?

McKay ahead of Rockne . 4nc /14 yrs vs 3nc/12 yrs
His contract length
Browns say hi.
No I did not lose a sig bet, but I am really really really ridiculously good looking.
You're damn right.
Wait, I thought the entire point was that both people win in 69?
bear was at kentucky at the time...and won the schools only conference championship.
the year the vols held opponents scoreless, what happened in the bowl game?
