Benighted, by Opeth... great acoustic stuff

    Opeth - Benighted

    Benighted
    Artist: Opeth
    Album: Still Life

    Lyrics

    Come into this night
    Here we'll be gone
    So far away
From our weak and crumbling lives
    Come into this night
    When days are done
    Lost and astray
In what's vanished from your eyes

What came and distorted your sight
Saw you benighted by your fright

    Come into this night
    Your plight alone
    Carry your weight
You are flawed as all of us
    Come into this night
    You only home
    It's never too late
    To repent, suffer the loss

What came and distorted your sight
Saw you benighted by your fright

What came and distorted your sight
Saw you benighted by your fright

    Come into this night
    When you're able
    To undo your deeds
And atone with your lonely soul
    Once you're into this night
    All minds are stable
    Forget all your needs
Lose the grip of all control

I know this is not a link to music, but it is a music thread so screw it.

    Grammy nominations:
    - How the hell is Bon Iver a new artist
    - Sigh no More was released in 2009 (October). How the hell is The Cave Record of the year? Did they release it as a single recently even though the album is over 2 years old?
    - Shouldn't apple get a co-credit on some of the songs made that are nominated. The computer had as much to do with it as the artist.
    - If radiohead gets best alternative album for the crap they put out this year I am going to be pissed.
    - If a song was played at your award show last year it shouldn't be nominated this year (see: Dr. Dre, Eminiem, Skylar Grey's "I Need a Doctor"
    - Taylor Swift is not country. To paraphrase David Allen Coe....it isn't a good country western song if you don't talk about mama, trains, trucks, prison or getting drunk. She is as country as Hootie. 1 in every 3 songs on country radio are country music. The others are not. Hell, Avett Brothers and Mumford and Son's are closer to country than Taylor Swift.

Vent off.......I hate the Grammys.....ok, now it is really off.

You make a lot of good points, except I disagree with calling Radiohead's last album "crap". It's nothing great, but to me at least, it definitely isn't crap.

Crap is a bad word. I think it is bad compared to their other albums.
It sure as hell is better than Britney Spears, but compared to expectations it doesn't live up.

    - Shouldn't apple get a co-credit on some of the songs made that are nominated. The computer had as much to do with it as the artist.: I HAVE TOTALLY CHANGED MY STANCE ON THE USE OF COMPUTERS IN MUSIC. I HATE 99% OF AUTOTUNED MUSIC, BUT THE USE OF COMPUTERS TAKES A TALENT JUST AS PLAYING ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT. MAYBE ITS THAT I HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR SOME ELECTRO POP STUFF. MANY BANDS INTEGRATE THE COMPUTER PRETTY WELL WITHOUT AN OVERLY MACHINE LIKE SOUND.
    - If radiohead gets best alternative album for the crap they put out this year I am going to be pissed. WHO ARE THE OTHER NOMINEES? I AGREE IT WASN'T THEIR BEST ALBUM BUT I ENJOYED IT NONE THE LESS. I DON'T FEEL LIKE IT IS AS BAD AS SOME FANS MAKE IT OUT TO BE.
    - If a song was played at your award show last year it shouldn't be nominated this year (see: Dr. Dre, Eminiem, Skylar Grey's "I Need a Doctor" THE GRAMMYS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A PR MARKETING MACHINE FOR RECORD COMPANIES AT THIS POINT. LAST YEARS PERFORMANCE IS LIKE THE COMING ATTRACTIONS FOR THIS YEAR. OR MAYBE MORE ACCURATE IS THAT THEY CAN MAKE MONEY ON THE SINGLE PERFORMED LAST YEAR THEN MAKE MORE CASH FROM PROMOTING IT AGAIN THIS YEAR. IT EXTENDS THE SHELF LIFE AND MONEYMAKING LONGEVITY OF A SONG IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE MAINSTREAM MUSIC IS DISPOSABLE CULTURE THAT EXISTS FOR THE NOW WHERE MONEY IS MADE AND CASHED OUT QUICKLY BECAUSE THE ATTENTION IS SHIFTED TO ANOTHER COMMODITY AS SOON AS THE MONEY IS WRUNG OUT OF THE PREVIOUS "ARTIST"

Hell, Avett Brothers and Mumford and Son's are closer to country than Taylor Swift.: AGREED, ALTHOUGH I WOULD SAY THAT RADIO-ROCK, RADIO-RAP OR ANY RADIO-FRIENDLY MUSIC IS ALL THE SAME GENRE AND ARE ALL INAUTHENTIC FOR THE MOST PART. I DON'T VIEW IT AS ART AS MUCH AS I VIEW IT AS A PRODUCT THAT IS MANUFACTURED AND SOLD IN STERILIZED MANOR THAT WILL BE MARKETABLE TO THE LARGEST CUSTOMER BASE POSSIBLE.

Award shows don't really appeal to me anymore. I came to the realization years ago that I don't need validation on liking the things I do. Whether a band or movie wins best of the year bears no consequence on my enjoyment of it. The fact that most of my favorite movies and music has not won awards going back before I was born seems to be a trend that will continue indefinitely.

They might as well just have given the award to Arcade Fire again if they have those kind of cut-off rules.

I can't complain too much of Bon Iver wins the grammy for best "album" or "record" or whatever they are calling it this year.... that release was pretty damn good.

    MyNameIsMyName

It’s end of the year list time.
Here is MyNameIsMyName’s favorites of 2011. I think it’s better to make these a year or two down the road for a more accurate list but lists are fun so here is this years. Instead of numbering them sequentially I put them in groups. Each album can be one or two spots higher or lower within the group depending on my mood.

    • Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues [My Favorite of the year]
    • Beirut – The Rip Tide [Best album they have put out. Great from start to finish.]
    • Sigur Ros – Inni [Cheating a bit since it is a live album, but still one of my favorites regardless.]
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Frank Turner – England Keep My Bones [his best album, surprised me how great it was, not a track I don’t like]
    • The Roots – Undun [great concept album. I wouldn’t classify it as a pure hip hop album. There are elements of hip hop, classical, soul and a cinematic flair (kind of like rock operas). The story is told in reverse starting with the death of a street hustler]
    • Wilco – The Whole Love [best Wilco in years]
    • Ryan Adams – Ashes and Fire [ditto for Adams, glad he went more stripped down sonically]
    • Okkervil River – I am Very Far [still really like this one but hasn’t had the replay value I thought it would]
    • The War on Drugs – Slave Ambient [big surprise of the year]
    • Bon Iver – Bon Iver [most of the time I love this album but sometimes I find myself bored with some of it]
    • My Morning Jacket – Circuital [glad Jim James ditched the Prince falsetto, one of my favorite bands back to form]
    • Holy Ghost! - Holy Ghost! [I am a sucker for catchy electro pop with a touch of 80’s flair and this was the best of that]
    • The Black Keyes – El Camino [they seem to get better with each release]
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Wu Lyf – Go Tell Fire Mountain
    • Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra [best R&B IMO this year, best talent in Odd Future]
    • Iron And Wine – Kiss Eachother Clean [when I am in the mood this is great]
    • Washed Out – Within Without
    • We Were Promised Jetpacks – In The Pit Of The Stomach
    • M83 – Hurry Up We're Dreaming [my jam of the year is Midnight City]
    • Kurt Vile – Smoke Ring For My Halo
    • Arctic Monkeys – Suck It And See
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • The Strokes – Angles
    • Radiohead – King of Limbs [not as bad as some say]
    • Weeknd – House of Balloons
    • Big K.R.I.T. - Return Of 4Eva [best hip hop of the year]
    • Cults – Cults
    • Jay Z and Kanye – Watch The Throne [expectations were high and it did ok]
    • Moonface – Organ Music
    • Cut Copy – Zonoscope
    • St Vincent – Strange Mercy
    • Mastodon – The Hunter [don’t listen to much metal, but this is the best that I have heard]
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Danger Mouse - Rome [mostly on the strength of Two Against One and Black]
    • Bright Eyes – The Peoples Key [kind of let down but still ok]
    • The Beach Boys - The SMiLE Sessions
    • TVOTR – 9 Types Of Light
    • Real Estate – Days
    • Destroyer - Kaputt

Others I thought were decent and had a song or two I liked: tUnE-yArDs, Stephen Malkmus, Smith Westerns, Gang Gang Dance, The Joy Formidable, Portugal The Man, Battles, Wild Flag,

Biggest disappointment of the year: Mobb Deep [first post-prison release was unlistenable]
