Whenever I get caught sitting around on my phone at work (I'm a server) I tell my manager that I am on a smoke break I don't smoke and I hate it. It affects other people and cigarette butts are a huge source of pollution. Alcohol only affects others once you get too drunk; drinking a beer or taking a shot doesn't mess with someone standing next to you (I am in no way advocating drunk driving).
23,000 dolphins are killed every year in Japan. For pest control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KRD8e20fBo
I would be for it. I hate working with smokers and its annoying hanging out with friends that smoke cuz they smell like shit and I would rather not go around everywhere smelling like an ash tray.
If you can't go through a full work day, WITH your lunch break without having to step outside to smoke, you should probably quit anyways.
I worked with a chick that would smoke at least 15 cigarrettes within an 8 hour shift. Never could count on her to be inside for more than 20 minutes at a time.
I'm fine with this especially with the health care stuff. Smokers obviously have much higher risks and I'm assuming would cost more for the company to insure.
I don't see it as a big deal, personally. I can see why smokers would see differently.
If employer will be providing insurance to them, I have no problem with it.
Steve Spurrier is a God, and Mark Richt worships him
I hate cigarettes mainly because of the cigarettes butts that cover the streets. But I have a problem with someone telling you what you can do in your free time. If you want to eliminate smoke breaks thats fine. Places shouldnt test for pot either
Not guilty y'all got to feel me
Plus the "legal" argument is nullified, now, by pot being legal in some states.. just because you can smoke it doesn't mean you can get a job.
Don't like it? Quit smoking.
Are smokers discriminated against? Should they be a protected class? Should obese people? Minorities?
What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome.--Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
I have no problem with it. Not only does my job not hire smokers, but there is a physical and obstacle course to pass to get hired and keep your job. There are a bunch of things that it is illegal to take into account before you are hired. Smoking, drinking, and depending on the job even physical shape are not in those groups. I could choose not to hire you because you have a lisp or stutter if I felt like it.
Employers should be able to hire who they want anyway. That said all the rules in society are starting to get a little ridiculous. And lol at all the pot smokers and drinkers in this thread thinking they have the high ground on this issue. And no I am not a smoker.
disagree with not hiring somebody because they smoke, completely ok with not allowing smoke breaks or smoking on premesis
“If you remember me, then I don't care if everyone else forgets.” ― Haruki Murakami
Wanna send your healthcare premiums through the roof? Start hiring smokers, insurance companies laugh all the way to the bank on this one. It is just smart business to hire young, healthy non-smokers.

They aren't mandating behavior, they will only hire non-smokers, if you want to smoke look elsewhere for employment.
Smokers are the most unconsideret people in the world IMO. They throw buds everywhere, make the people around them inhale the smoke and take numerous smoke breaks while the non-smokers are doing all the work. Smokers.
I disagree with it. Addiction is a physical illness, and smoking is no different. Would they turn down a diabetic if they were the most qualified? What about someone who struggles with bipolar disorder?
Who do you want delivering a high risk baby? The smoking obstetrician who has handled hundreds of similar cases or less qualified OB who was hired because he/she doesnt use nicotene?
Hospital stress management and EAPs are a joke. Healthcare is stressful as hell. The decisions, the hours, etc...
I suggest a happy medium. Viva could negotiate better rates by requiring new smokng employes to enroll in nicotene cessation programs. Tell UAB "The the better results, the bigger discount". Push this on.grandfathered employees as well. Give them incentives. Lower rates mean more $$$ for everyone.
Do not allow smoking on campus. Not sure how theyd enforce this at UAB...
...and you have the right to work elsewhere.

last time i checked - no one was born with a cigarette in their mouth..
comparing people that choose/chosetosmokeandgotaddicted to people who genetically can't produce enough insulin or have a genetic mood imbalance is the stupidest thing i've ever heard.
Are those the only two choices? Didn't realize that smokers are the only ones with experience.
You missed my point, what's next, one does this more places, then what's after that, what else will companies say you CAN'T do in your personal life.
I'm fine with no "smoke breaks" or banning from company property. It the idea that someone is telling me what I can can't do on my own time, at home away from work. Like telling me I can't eat fast food or live with my girlfriend without being married.
This is America, stay out of my personal life.

Soccer is Cool!
Do really think it will stop there?
Companies are now checking you on-line history, and aren't hiring people based on personal views and posts. People are being fired over fb posts.
See the pattern........companies trying to control people's personal lives.
Dang straight that's the right word...
when ted turner owned CNN he made employees sign a statement stating whether they smoked or not. smokers had to pay extra for health insurance
