You are living in fantasy land. Is it cheaper? Of course. But building a brand new system from scratch would be terribley expensive. It would also be one step closer to government censorship.
Why does this fall to the govt and not the employer?
At the very least, why is this not being run at lower levels (school districts) rather than the federal govt?
Fantasy land? They're on the cusp of being able to 3D print HUMAN ORGANS. You can't apply today's costs and standards to where we'll be in 25, 50, or more years. The technological advancement curve is way, WAY too exponential for that.
Obviously part of the problem with the program was more than the 7 million people you cited are using the phones.
The free cell phone "costs the phone company $20, the government subsidizes part of the monthly plan ($25.00 a month??) and the user pays the difference.
The cell phone companies have an incentive to make money, so the program gets abused. Another example of what happens when the federal government allows private companies to run federal programs. (Halliburton would be the most famous)
I don't see anyone in this thread complaining about AT&T ripping off taxpayers, its always the mythical black woman with on her bedazzled I-Phone 5 that is robbing America.
First they were Reaganphones. Then they were Bubbaphones. Next they were Dubyaphones. Last year they became infamous as Obamaphones.Hordes of critics attacked the president in 2012 for giving away...
All I was commenting on in my post was that the idea of "needing" technology now versus simply how "plugged in" we'll be in 25 or more years are probably lightyears apart.
We arent talking occupations. We are talking just having one for the hell of it. If you cant afford one, you dont need one period.
It is also a shame that working people have to pay a fee/tax on their bill so others can have one
"Affording" them won't be an issue in a few decades. For anyone.
All I can do is laugh at this
LOL. Sometimes I just don't know what to think about you. You are pretty goofy.

What do you have against what I'm saying? Have you not watched the trend of technology, from both a quality and price standpoint, over the last decade? Even just the last couple years? Hell, you can already get some SMART PHONES for free with a plan, much less a flip phone.
You seem to not care really what something is worth or what it takes to operate the system. You only care that you've assigned some value to something and have decided that value makes it a privilege and, thus, no one is entitled to it. That's all well and good. But rather than writing off where we'll be in 25 years, why not wait and see what happens and re-analyze our situation?
We won't need them because we'll all be broke by then.

God, give me patience today. If given strength I may beat someone to death.
Potentially. I've always been of the opinion that life's way too short to work a job you hate. Luckily I found a job I enjoy that pays me just fine at this point in my life. If someone wants to work a job that pays poorly and they're happy with it, more power to them. As long as they understand their situation.
Why do you guys try to talk politics on tBB? These threads all end up the same. Colossal waste of time because you can't convince the other party your view is correct.
Get your politics fix elsewhere. This is a football board FFS.
No need for a solid retort after this "Obamaphone" story has been proved false hundreds of times.
I know "Obamaphone" sounds cool to say and you can giggle about it with your friends but it doesnt make it true.
An Obama administration program provides free cell phones and cellular service to welfare recipients?
Haven't you guys learned BLF is a gay black guy who masturbated to Obama
He never claimed Obama created the program, or the USF for that matter. Perhaps you should re-read his post.
Is this the original "Obama phone lady"?
Why does that matter? I fail to see how being able to print human organs means that we can provide wireless coverage to the whole nation without a significant cost. You also have not addressed the issue of government censorship. If the internet is free, cell usage will be free as well. All broadband providers will cease to exist along with telecommunication companies. What you will be left with is a government owned network that they control exclusively. What a stupid idea.
The Internet should be free. I have no qualms about paying for content one online, but being able to access the greatest network humanity has ever created (up to this point) should be available to everyone. Hell, Google is already doing this with their Fiber service. You can pay $300 upfront or $25/mo for a year and get 5mbs/1mbs Internet from then on FREE. It's not the fastest on the planet, no, but it's quite a step away from when we used to pay $50 or $100 or how much (I honestly don't remember) a month or year for 56K dial-up.
You're viewing the Internet as a product. I'm viewing it as a vessel.
I hope you are not in a business field. And I wonder why you want us to live under the government's thumb.
Sorry my liberal friends. I had to work a little today. I'm back. So what's new up in here?
Advocating government enterprise over the private sector is truly idiotic and reserved for high school kids that havent experienced the real world. Life lesson, everything the government touches turns to sh*t.
When did Google become the government?
