Never understood this rule.
I fly private for work all the time and we are on our phones or computers the whole time during the taxi and takeoff.
They were probably thinking along the lines of wanting everyone on the plane alert in case something goes wrong? Maybe?
Was told by the pilot that they do this so the passengers focus on instructions as most instructions are being given during those periods.
It never works on me because I still don't pay attention.

what i really find interesting about this - a good friend of mine posts on Instagram all the time pre-flight, mid takeoff, mid-flight and even landing. while he's supposed to be "flying" the plane
That would be great! It's a silly rule
