Forget the subject matter of the study (guns), that is a smaller subject although dear to me. Gun crime has dropped roughly in half since 1993 and yet the public thinks that gun crimes have increased in the last 20 years (56%). What is the reason for the difference in reality and perception?
My guess is the constant media bombardment. Most will accept that given the choice of a bad story or a feel good story, the press will usually go with the bad (sells more/gets more viewers - think rubber necking on the highway at an accident). The change from 20 years ago is how much instant media is in front of everyone; more TVs, more TV channels with news, smart phones, 4G tablets, twitter...
I guess my point is that in my opinion the media has evolved from the "watchdog" newspapers that just reported the facts to expose the truth to much more of a tool of influence for those with the $$$. In other words, what is reported has little to do with the truth and much more to do with the opinions of the head of that organization.
Few Americans are aware of a dramatic drop in violent crime and more than half believe, incorrectly, that gun crime has risen, according to a new survey.
Has to be the access to info that technology allows. Before you only heard of the local incidents or the really large mass shootings nationally. Now in 5 minutes I can pretty much find and read about every incident anywhere in the country
To people who pay attention to politics or are involved in non-political things that the news reports (say cops); this is no surprise.
I do think a huge portion of the population simply turn on (TV, computer, printed headline) and take it as the gospel truth though and never think twice. That is what scares the bejesus out of me.
