He just committed to UM today.
Personally I like David Cornwell and Michael O'Connor better, and they both had legitimate interest. Not sure what the coaches are seeing with Speight. Doesn't have the arm strength of Cornwell.
If anyone has seen him in person, please fill me in. Thanks.
This makes me happy.
You make me happy.
You guys only taking one qb in 2014?
Our quarterback does front flips, suck it.
Right on, why in the world would he commit on signing day 2013? He waits till tomorrow and he has the day all for himself. Congrats.
I'm assuming because you think Cornwell is likely to head to Bama now?
Because Cornwell and O'Connor are both scheduled to call the coaches later today and we are only taking 1 QB.
I know the Michigan coaches were hoping for an early commit, and they let their top 3 know that's what they were looking for. I think Speight just committed as soon as he got the call rather than risk one of the other guys jumping at an offer.
How to get the least hype for a commitment possible....I know, I'll commit on the previous years signing day!
I don't really know much about him, but I can only assume he has a bright future if he's committing this early.
Time and change will surely (truly) show
How firm thy friendship ... OHIO!
Some kids aren't about the hype. Which is good IYAM.
We'd heard it was likely a Mich/Bama battle (early on) going into his JR day visit, so yeah. He's going to throw for our staff (like most QB's they offer do) and we'll likely offer after.
I honestly liked Cornwell better from what I've seen, but there are HS coaches, and obviously our staff who think Speight is one of the best in the country.
Could work out well for both programs.
Dont be surprised if we offer before he throws
With him not getting the Michigan offer, that could make a big impression on him, but I think the Alabama coaches will wait until he throws. Clearly, if Michigan didn't extend an offer (and apparently he was #3, behind Speight and O'Connor) then there's something there that concerned them. Whether that concern is real or imagined, the Alabama coaches are way too smart to jump at something without at least doing some due diligence.
Please offer a source for him being #3.
TVH texted O'Connor, and O'Connor told him that the coaches said they were going to offer O'Connor and Speight today, but that Speight accepted on the spot so they didn't end up extending the offer to O'Connor. They weren't planning on offering Cornwell today.
This is what the analyst Chris Anderson had to say about him.
"Droppin in to share my thoughts as well. I saw him at WVU's prospect camp this past summer. At the time, no one really knew who he was and he didn't have a profile on any of the sites.
For the first half of the camp (agility drills, sprints, etc), I didn't even notice him.
Then the 1-on-1's began and his throws were insanely accurate. 40 yard go route? Right over the shoulder. 20-yard out? Waiting for the WR when he turned around. 5-yard slant? In the hands in stride.
From analysts to fans, everyone was oohing and ahhing by the end of it. One of WVU's coaches could be overheard saying "now that's a f***ing gunslinger."
Needless to say, I feel he should also be ranked a little higher. Some issues his sophomore season kept him out of the spotlight, however. Great pickup for Michigan. Really great."
I know that he had an injury his junior year and since he was in a prep school he was able to reclassify to the class of '14. I'm not sure about his arm strength since it's hard to tell if it's actually his arm, or him being forced to throw off of his back foot because he has no protection, or both. Either way I'm trying to not get too caught up in looking at the ranking, and I'm just going to trust that the coaching staff knows what they're doing.
He went to the same HS in RVA as Russell Wilson. He reclassified to 2014 last season after breaking his collarbone. Should be good for you. Pretty good arm and very accurate. Surprised he pulled the trigger this early.
The class of VA at QB in 14 is Henderson out of Lake Braddock (NOVA). Wish the Hoos would jump in with him.
Henderson liked UM as well... Coaches took a pass.
This QB commit you guys got is impressive, but DC seems likely to follow a Hackenburg type path. I think he's just a bit of an unknown for some reason with staffs right now.
Guess it's us or VTech. Would be nice to finally land a 5* type QB, which he appears to be.
Yea I knew Chris was high on him. An WVU had him high on their board.
It's funny you mention Hackenberg because HS coaches from that conference have said they think Speight might be better than Hackenberg.
Now personally from the highlight tapes. I prefer Cornwell as I've said, but I haven't seen both guys throw like our coaching staff.
Speight is a good kid. He can throw it. I personally liked his film a lot, though their competition is among VA's poorest.
Wasn't on VT's radar, however. VT has extended about five QB offers thus far and Speight wasn't one of them. We'll take one QB this year.
VT seems pretty high on Jacob Park and I saw y'all just offered him today as well. As of now, sounds like you'll get one and we'll get the other. I'll be happy either way.
