A lot of PAC12 talk with JC's thread and MT waffling back and forth.
Stanford and Oregon look to be THE programs in the PAC12 right now.
Does Stanford take over with Chip gone or does Oregon remain on top?
I go with Oregon, but I also don't buy into Stanford being one of the big boys yet either.
Both of them will be nothing special, more of the same with neither taking the next step
Both aren't national title contenders for 2013, not even close really
Good teams, both are far from great teams
fsufsu said... I've got about 10 great stories on Lane but all you need to know is he will never be a loser, that's for sure.
You and I disagree on Oregon.
I don't think they are top 3 good and think FSU would really give them major problems, but I think they are great.
I didn't like the way a Stanford team that is supposed to be physical couldn't win the line of scrimmage against Notre Dame. Plus, they have no one that can make plays. If they can't win up front, which they haven't proven to be able to do OOC, there is no offense to speak of from them.
I never confused Chip for a great coach. Great playcaller, but not a great coach.
It wouldn't surprise me if he was. The question is will he better on Saturday than Chip?
You and me have different definitions of great is all that is
Agreed on Stanford, but you realize they won the LOS against Oregon... but you think Oregon is great ? sorry dude but that doesn't make much sense
Have to see how Helfrich does, but losing Chip has to hurt I imagine.
Dude was a hell of a coach.
Right now I'd ride with Stanford.
just because kelly is gone doesnt stop the nike money from trickling down into the program. I am sure some of it will trickle into more recruits pockets and they will maintain top dog.
I've been on Stanford's bandwagon since about 1/2 way through Shaw's first season. I really, really like the way he coaches. If CNS retired tomorrow, I'd be pretty happy to get a guy like Shaw (assuming we don't promote Smart or hire Beliceck or one of the Harbaughs).
I also have a lot of fun watching Oregon play. I get the continuity angle, and long term, they may be just as good or better. But I simply cannot believe they don't have a hiccup or 2 during this dude's first year.
Takes more than money to win games
Signed, Auburn football
The best team doesn't always win.
Oregon had a FR QB and a lot of players on offense being relied on to be THE guy last year for the first time.
I know Stanford had a FR QB as well, but the core of the team had been together the previous year as well with Luck.
Maybe Oregon isn't as great as they are unknown potential or something stupidly profound like that.
Nah, I just think you like Oregon is all
That is fine, I don't hate them or nothing
I just know that style of play doesn't win championships, at least not yet seeing as how it never has so far
Stanford, I just don't see oregon's gimmick working against elite competition.
The opposite imo. He was a great coach with dubious play calling abilities
It hasn't yet without a Cam Newton and maybe to a lesser extent Vince Young at QB.
I do kind of like watching Oregon, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan.
Admit I overshot the not a great coach think. Obviously better than I described.
You'll have to explain what you're getting at though. I watch Oregon, but obviously don't pay as much attention as you do.
I'd say Kelly's weakness may be his stubbornness, but that could be seen as one of his strengths to a certain degree as well.
Just a few examples...
Oregon - Stanford last year. No way in hell they should have lost that game. Chip's play calling was insane bad. Stanford did play a perfect game and did dominate the LOS, but Chip couldn't/wouldn't adjust. Not stubborn. Pig-headed.
Oregon - SC (2 years ago). Clock management
Oregon - NC "the shovel pass". Dude installs a completely different package for the game. Confusion. Stuff city.
Chip didn't lose often but he squeezed it in some very, very big games.
As far as a great coach... A great motivator, a Bill Walshian eye for talent, and he made Dixon, Masoli and Thomas (the latter two, horrible, horrible QBs) all world almost over night.

If a team gets dominated on the LOS, how could you say "there's no way in hell they should have lost that game"?
Curious to see how the 0's new coach steps up. I'd roll with Stanford, that team just knows how to play football.
JMO as well.
It depends on how Helfrich picks things up for us. We return a loaded roster and a solid year would do a lot for the continuity of the program. A ruling on punishments coming out soon will also help us moving forward.
We will probably pass more this year than in years prior. We have our best passing QB we've had in a while, and are thin at RB while some young guys get acclimated.
It's a big year for the program. We have the roster and schedule to keep things going. Really comes down to how Helfrich is on Saturdays, which is yet to be seen.
I think Stanford is the program in the Pac 12 solid all around, unfortunately they will always be behind the SEC in talent bc of their admissions policy, but I love their style of play
Chip was very much a great coach, just didn't have the horses on the LOS. Just look at his recruiting classes, he could find low rated hidden gems.
In your opinion
And outside of random facts that nobody cares about that is pretty much all you got, your opinion is terrible on what teams bring to the table heading into the season
Look no further than last season and your homer stance on USCw, you actually thought you guys had a good team
" BobbyJimbo really sucks if he can keep up with Kiffin "..... wut ?
And I said nothing about preseason polls, you did and simply based USCw being good off of them because you clearly can't think for yourself
See I make my own opinions, and I knew USCw was garbage last year and you know for a fact I told you so all offseason, and all offseason you... like now, thought I was retarded and didn't " know " football
But in reality I clearly understand it a lot better than you ever did
Lots of those Nole ranks I disagreed with, on this very board for some of them.... yet, like with USCw last offseason, you can't give me any credit for cause you can't stand it when Im right and you are wrong
You are simply a bitter old man and I have owned countless times on here, this is why I tell you that you should just stick with stats.... you aren't smart enough to try and test me when it comes to predictions
You should work the numbers on that IYAM.
If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.
Old enough to know you are not very smart when it comes to football
Because only a moron and the morons that work for ESPN fell for the USCw/Barkley hype last season
Remember when you thought he was a first round pick ? me too, I have been laughing ever since
