After adding 3,400Mw in 2012. Will likely hit 10,000 new Mw in 2014 with innovations stacking on top of each other over the last 18 months. With some aggressive, intelligent action we could leave China in the freaking dust over the next 5 years by transforming our power grid and usage. Just pumped about it and thought others may care.
During the first quarter of 2013, the U.S. has added 723 megawatts (MW) of new solar capacity to its power grid, a 33% growth rate year-on-year.
Its cool to look closely at technical breakthroughs in the lab and ways to reduce our personal energy consumption, but we should never lose track of the bigger picture.
The era of LEDs is upon us, and massive energy savings are still ripe for reaping.
Lol. Solar and Wind power is just a waste of time.
And we're buying all those solar panels, as well as 90% of all wind generation equipment from China.
If you aren't producing jiggawatts then you are wasting your time.
He was just an 8 figga nigga by the name of jigga. I'm talking Doc Brown technology. He was making ice is the 1880's.
Great to hear OP. I'm doing solar on my house when I settle down.
You probably think oil is the pinnacle of energy technology.
That is bc they get HUGE tax credits to do so. Not because it is better but bc the Feds are giving them a lot of money to do it.
I hate it when the Feds try to pick winners and losers bc they suck at it.
My son's message to Obama, Clemson, and Georgia
Are you sure about that. I know GE makes a lot of wind Turbines and I believe they make them in the US. Here in my town, GE is making Nat Gas Turbines and shipping them all over the world.
THis is interesting if true. Does this take into account tax credits and such or is this holding things equal? Just wondering.
Had stock I'm solar energy the past 7 years.. , already seeing a lot of benefits from a bunch if different solar energy investments. Feels good to catch a break
Danielle Hunter, Jamario Rasco, Anthony FREAK Johnson.. DL wrecking crew of 2013.
Only two massively ignorant comments so far, encouraging! Let's get it going. For the infrastructure to be barely there this is amazing given the corrupt nature of human government.
With the internet of everything far more established, solar approaching 65% efficiency, Kw/hr cost of solar beneath 50 cents, AI far more advanced and supercomputing plugged in we should see 50,000Mws added to the grid in the year 2018 just as a guess. We'd be careening towards a vastly different world at that point with plunging electrical costs and electricity available to the entire world.
You really believe we are going to just burn coal for the future of our race? Solar and nuclear are the forseeable future of humanity. FACT.
I have no problem with Solar, just want to make sure I am not having to pay a lot of money through taxes to make it work. Nat Gas is a great energy source as well with ZERO government incentives right now. I hope Solar does work.
The DOE predicts solar cost to drop to 35 cents per kwhr by mid-2015. It will be cheaper, cleaner, more integratable, and decentralized as compared to hydrocarbons. WTF are you in denial over? I honestly can't tell.
If you like plummeting electricity costs and a healthier world then you are pumped about this news. Ignorance is the only enemy of joy here.
I know this a gigantic big picture question and will prob come off differently than I intend because I'm a little drunk, but the premise is to trap the heat/energy emitted from the sun, which permeates our atmosphere, correct? That's not infinite.
No, I'm not saying we'd burn up the sun's energy, that's retarded. But, the heat/energy that permeates our atmosphere is finite, at least in a time based sense. If its absorbed on a grand enough scale, the natural inclination is to think less heat/energy is available to be absorbed by earth, water, plants, animals, etc.
Would it cool the atmosphere if solar were enacted on a large enough scale? Would it affect crops? Would it affect migration patterns?
Huh? That's PART of the greatness of solar, its decentralized, there's no way for some billionaire or a group of them to set prices. It cripples corruption.
BLF, tell me you saw this!

Didn't it come out not too long ago that the hydraulic fracturing process while drilling for natural gas is actually dirtier than just burning coal? I think it was related to large amount of methane released.
I may be missing something but American solar companies can not compete with Chinese producers. For a US based company to get into the market would be suicide. See Solyndra.
So you're telling me as efficiencies sky rocket and our ability to "own" our own power supply comes about that our utilities won't decrease? Not even when instead of paying an electric bill you can produce more than you use and get a check from the utility district each month?
You are going to have to leave this jingoistic, our country versus their country ideals to the aging population dying and taking most of the world's bigotries with them.
We will innovate, so will the Chinese, the Chinese will reap rewards of manufactoring jobs, both countries experience massive gains from overhauling their energy grids. Humanity advances......YAY
Exploration is a business expense. That is ALWAYS tax deductible, unless you are taking people out to meals or club dues (Thanks Jimmy Carter). So laugh all you want but every business gets that. They don't get Tax credits.
I live on an island with the highest Kwh cost in the nation. $.45/Kwh. I know, it's ridiculous. We actually had a company come in and build a wind turbine park. They spent a lot of money, got approved, and then got shut down. That was 5 years ago and now they are rusted to shit, don't even work anymore. They got shut down because the power company didn't want to lose income.
The alternative energy industry is being held down. Compare it to disease cures. There is more money in treatment than cures so it is held back. It's all about the money. We should already be energy independent but we aren't because of lobbyists, government fucks, and people trying to milk profits.
