I watched Smith and his Olathe (Kan.) North team take on Shawnee Mission East tonight. East won 3-0.
Smith is a big kid at 6-6/280 or so and he is almost wasp-waisted right now. He has really wide shoulders and his torso is really long so that means he has a really long wingspan too. He looks like how you would probably draw up an elite OT when they are a junior in high school. He plays guard for North though. They run a lot of misdirection plays so I can see why they want him on the inside but he seems like more of a right tackle in college.
When I see a five-star lineman against competition from the state of Kansas, I expect him to be dominant. That wasn't really the case at all. Smith did do a good job of staying low and at times showed the power he could get with that leverage. A lot of the time, though, he simply just lunged out at his defender or looked around for somebody to block without finding anyone. He wasn't driving guys backward. Now, he did play both ways almost all night and had a few tackles and a sack on defense, but from all the hype he's received for so long I expected more. He didn't show much emotion either. North missed a crucial 4th down and he just walked over to get ready to play defense. Same thing when North stopped East for three straight plays from within the two-yard line.
I think he is a good player but his lack of physicality at this stage is a little bit concerning. I think he can be taught technique and he has a great frame but I just didn't see a dominant player or one that screamed "five-star" like you would expect.

So what you're saying is he is a ton of potential, but lacks a mean streak?
No, what he's saying is that he's overrated and likely to fall in the rankings. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane in Kansas none the less.
Really surprising that he didn't show a physical mindset in person. His film looks physical. Little bit disappointing because I love this kid's film.

We'll take him.
After seven wants what is the opinion still?
Game ended 3-0? Must have been a really boring game.
Kid is gonna be a stud in the Maroon and White.
