Because football intelligence is not quantitative
Physically, nothing about him screams superstar but his football acumen is historic
fsufsu said... I've got about 10 great stories on Lane but all you need to know is he will never be a loser, that's for sure.
You have to consider the fact that for much of the 90's, LSU football was a bag of broken dicks.
Yeah our best plunders are prob Lance Leggett from Texas and Kyle Wright from California even though both were huge busts..

LSU sucked in those days and kids weren't really that interested in them. Miami and FSU were the big boys of college football at the time. LSU didn't start locking down LA until Saban came in.
Collins wasn't really a suprise or a major shock type pull like many of the others in this thread. While many didn't believe it from the LSU side, some good in the know people from the Bama side knew Collins was Bama bound in the summer before his senior season. LSU was playing fom behind most of his recruitment. It would have been a bigger suprise if LSU pulled him than the way it ended up.
Most recent stunner to me was Steward. FSU people just knew he was a lock and then that fateful late trip to Clemson happened and changed everything. His mother's disgust with his decision is something i'll never forget. Collins' mom made a scene as well but I think it's pretty well decided that she is a bit cooky so it's a little different.
Biggest pulls this year for me were, Robert Foster by Bama, Collins by Arkansas and Tunsil to OM(everyone that says things about OM buying players needs to point to this one as the one that could be trouble for OM. Came out of nowhere and he has ties to So Fla's favorite "Willie Lyles' clone)
Stefon Diggs. Maryland wasn't on his list in mid January and three weeks later he is committed to them. Coming of a 2-10 season.
Ask a UF, OSU, or AU fan and they all thought he was theirs until about 12 hours before his announcement

the kid was from Maryland, wasn't that shocking outside of the fact that nobody thought he would pick Maryland cause of how terrible the program is
But landing a kid from your own state is hardly a major coup
Tunsil, Joe McKnight, and Landon Collins immediately come to mind.
Te'o and Vanderdoes immediately come to mind.
Up until they actually declared on signing day I thought we didn't have a shot with either of them.
Corey Lemonier out of Hialeah... Miami's backyard and for sure thought he was going FSU. Sadly enough under the absolutely garbage coaching, he actually digressed through his college career. Would have been interesting to see what he could have done if Tracy Rocker had stayed.....Damn Gene Chizik...Damn that douche.
I was going to put a witty joke here, but I forgot bama fans still use picture books. So I thought I'd expedite the process for you...
Damn. You two need to meet up at the Wofford game this year and hug it out.
Cameron Colvin was a bigger pull than Armstead. We looked pretty good for AA once Tosh left Cal. Cam was supposed to go to SC or Michigan and shocked everybody by picking Oregon. De'Anthony was definitely the most surprising of the bunch though. That was way out of left field.

I would really like to have seen Lemon at Jack in our system. Always thought he'd have been a damn good fit.
Yeah. Freak athlete...Shitty coaching. He really did get worse as time went on... 2010 he showed us a lot....then Gene showed his true face in 2011 and 2012....I will always hate that asshat for how much he has set Auburn Football back...
While those were good players, they weren't out of anyone's backyard (outside of Cal and Hawai'i) so not as big of pulls IMO. You look at McKnight, Mamba, Matt Thomas, Winston, Powell, etc. and those are crazy.
Im still laughing at you know who trying to act like Thomas wasn't the epic pull of the last half century for FSU
Its literally only the second time in this century that FSU has pulled a Miami kid that Miami also offered
Even with Miami being down that is a hard thing to do

I think this guy going out of state was the worst for Louosiana people... He was going to change football..
We took them right out of USC's bathtub.
And besides Joel McKnight I don't know who any of those other guys are.
But he also gave Auburn more than they have ever had.
It was a senior laden team, Gus Malzahn's offense with Cam Newton, and Nick Fairley that did that. I honestly think if we had a half competent coach at the helm, we would have won a lot of those games a lot easier than we did. Oh well, it happens and I'm glad whatever happened happened... now we have a lot of repairing to do.
Yea, I guess you could use the Larry Coker rule with Gene
Out of our bathtub? Laie and Placer are not our bathtub homeboy.
You not knowing who those guys are explains a lot.
I meant they were picked and favored to attend USC and ended up Irish.
And why? Should I know who those other guys are or something? I've heard of Joel McKnight kid had speed for days a true stud.
