I was specifying that the Barbecue I was talking about was smoked Pork. That's primarily what we barbecue in NC. Briskets, Ribs, Chicken, Fish, etc... are all fine by me. You can smoke game if you have it. But if you are talking about Barbecue in NC, you are generally referring to open-pit wood smoked whole hog BBQ... generally.
No worries... You like BBQ with minimal or no sauce, your alright by me.

what you were saying is that if you don't like vinegar based bbq, it's because you had shitty vinegar based bbq or liked that thick nasty sauce. it's neither. i enjoy giving the east coasters shit about sauce and cue because i think it's a crutch and they think it's the way it has to be done. i actually dig good east coast pulled pork bbq, but i think the vast majority of it is shitty. i certainly don't like thick sauce. we eat plenty of smoked pork here in texas and never a drop of sauce - if you cook it properly, there's no need for sauce. just smoked pork greatness.
in the interest of learning something new, can you please explain this to me? all i've ever done/seen is fully enclosed smoking, which traps the smoke and envelops the meat. if you are cooking something over an open pit, how is it smoking?

Yes, yes it is. You can cook chicken or beef with a barbecue technique, but only pork is BBQ. Period.

Agree, if done right, it no sauce is required. Doesn't mean that good sauce cannot improve it even further.
