I think people are downplaying the fact that other countries can actually be good at things, even better than us.

I think you might find this to be a good read. Eric Wynalda speaks the truth with what is wrong with how we do things in the US. It is in three parts and you can click through at the bottom to each part.
We need someone like him to be outspoken against the status quo of American soccer. His team that he just put together one month before qualifying just upset the Portland Timbers in overtime.
Who cares? It's soccer. I'd rather have our best and brightest athletes play Football, Basketball, and Baseball.

Baseball has been taken away from America. We don't rule that sport, at all. (besides pitching)
I think the argument is that our freak athletes taught technique from youth league on up would harness both, and we'd dominate.
The sad part is that soccer is a beautiful game, thats appreciation could be fostered in the states. And that it could provide tons more academic scholarships to our great student athletes if only it were hipper.
