Was Oregon/Lyles the Yahoo! "10"?

  • There has been so much thrown around about what story may or may not be coming from Yahoo! Sports. Someone speculated on the radio about what school it could be and even threw "SEC West" out there.

Wetzel was on the radio recently and basically laughed at the notion that they would ever leak anything that gave any indication on the subject of any upcoming story. He mocked the websites, the "not Arkansas or Ole Miss" idea, and the idea that it was or wasn't LSU, Alabama, Auburn, or anyone else. He basically just found it all amusing and added nothing to support anything.

So in another thread related to this, I went back to where this all originated...Charles Robinson's interview with a Chicago radio show.

Below is the transcript: read it carefully....what he actually says, not what we've been looking for.

    ***********************************************************************************************************************
ESPN: So is there another team, another organization, another sport that should be nervous right now because you're working on something comparable?

Robinson: Yeah [laughs], we've still got a couple more coming.

Robinson: I've got probably a six to a seven, maybe an eight depending on where you live coming in the next two weeks, and then by August, a ten.

ESPN: Well, what would you consider the Tressel story, on a one to ten?

    Robinson: Probably an eight.

ESPN: So there's something even bigger than that coming in the summertime?

Robinson: Yeah. Yeah. There's one I've been working on since, I don't know, I'm probably entering my fourth month on it, and we'll probably get a good six, seven months in on it before I'm done.
    *******************************************************************************************************************************

So I'm reading what was actually ever said to start this whole "who is the 10?" explosion.

This interview was done at the beginning of March. He said he had something in a couple weeks that was maybe a 6 or 7 (nationally)....and I'm not sure what that was. And then he said a 10 was coming later. But he said he was already about 4 months into it, and that he would have 6 or 7 months in it before he was done (or before August).

Well, the Oregon/Lyles story was released in July, which is 8 months after his proclaimed start date, and is obviously "by August".

Remember, at the time Robinson called the Ohio State story an 8, Tressel still had a job, the SI stories hadn't come out, and at that point he was known for having covered up his knowledge that some players had gotten some cash and tattoos from a local business man.

That's a pretty big deal, so he gives it an 8. Remember, Tressel still had a job, and a lot of other hoopla surrounding the Buckeyes, rumor or not, wasn't out there yet. And it's not like Tressel, as far as any actual PROOF goes, had anything to do with what the kids were up to, he simply pretended he didn't know about it after the fact. So it's a big deal, but not HUGE. They won the Sugar Bowl and the players were suspended 5 games. Not a huge deal at that point.

    Now compare Oregon.

In Robinson's story about Lyles, he has a guy on record saying that the head coach of a program that just played in the BCS title game is okaying $25,000 checks to him from the university for essentially assisting in recruiting of some Texas players.

There are hand written notes from the coach. Emails from the compliance director. Phone records of all of them talking about all kinds of things (trips, transferring students, changing who can sign the LOI, etc). Then when the NCAA is asking about what the check was for, you have the coach scrambling to provide the NCAA with anything at all that resembles a product to tag the $25k to.

The more I read what Robinson originally actually said, and the more I think about the Oregon/Lyles story, I'm wondering if that was the "10" he was referring to and working on. It's a pretty lively story. Now to us, down in SEC country, it instantly lost 50% of it's drama because it didn't involve an SEC school. But if you really think about all that story entails....if the Tressel "lie" was an 8, then the contents of the Oregon/Lyles story could easily be a 10.

And don't forget that literally every single thing regarding this "10" that has come out since his original interview has been created by bloggers, radio hosts, and message boards taking guesses.

If you take ONLY what he himself ever said, I don't know that this "10" is still on it's way. We may have just missed it due to our "SEC" perspective on things.

    Just a thought.

I Ain't got no Worries - Lebron James

  • he's talking about 3 different stories.

osu was the original one, and he said he's got 2 others. one a 6-8 and one a 10.

oregon may be the 10, but there's still at least a 6-8 out there then.

I know, I said "not sure what that was" in regards to the 6 or 7. Because he said it would be out in a couple weeks way back in March, I assumed that had come and gone or disappeared?

and no way he is going to clear anything up.....they like the hits and attention they are getting from everyone looking for the 10.

  • TOSU was the 8, I imagine this is the 6, and Auburn will be 10.

Joke is on Yahoo. I search with Google, email with google, follow recruiting on 247, and watch porn on keezmovies. Someone will copy and paste the story here for me. I know they're good at breaking these stories, but I don't know how they make any money at yahoo.

Didnt Lyles play a part with LSU too? Maybe Oregon and LSU got scooped at the same time with the Lyles connection. But LSU's situation is worse so they're holding off to release the big bang in early to late august when fall practice starts.

No, Oregon/LSU/Lyles was the 6-8 for next week/mid summer; however, it was pushed back because of the OSU scandal blowing up. The Oregon scandal was originally leaked via twitter in late February/early March. Baron Flenory Jr. and Will Lyles were initially named as the street agents involved. Flenory actually worked for Scout.com and gave detailed assessments of prospects, so despite charging exorbitant rates for his services, he was let off the hook and some deluded Duck fans claimed the investigation was over (I remember reading people argue with Oregon fans on their boards, Duck fans claimed that no media outlet was reporting the investigation wasn't over, so there was no way to reason with them that it actually wasn't). However, Lyles wasn't able to justify his rates, so the investigation actually continued on.

"The 10" has always been slated for release in mid to late August (when CFB talk starts to heat up again, right before the season starts). I guarantee you that "the 10" will upset some people on this board, too. It's inevitable, so everyone needs to try to stay level-headed and brace themselves.

After reading the transcript of the conversation, I'm wondering why you feel confident in "mid to late August" when all he said was A. "by August" and B. "6 or 7 months on it". July is "by August" and is already 8 months from when he said he started.

I posted the actual transcript for this very reason. People seem to be throwing things like "has always been slated for mid to late August release", as if anyone more credible than my mom has ever said that. I don't mean that as a direct shot at you, because what you stated is the kind of rumor that's been going around and is generally accepted.

I'm just saying the "rumor" never came from Robinson. "By August" and "6 or 7 months" came from Robinson. Both of which fit with a July story, which Oregon/Lyles was.

And hey, the "10" could be all about Auburn. Who knows. It just seems to be the popular choice. Popular choices are often popular because they seem so easy and don't take much thought...like pop music. I'm just trying to look closer at it and see if Auburn is as obvious as everyone thinks.

I have personally though that it's Mississippi State for several months now (for a lot of reasons I've said in other threads). The fact that it could be Oregon just occurred to me today. Auburn is kind of a lot of people's default guess, I'm just wondering about other options and sharing for people who want to give it some thought beyond what the masses jump on.

I don't think Mississippi State would be a "10" unless it was something like the Russian mafia is running their program in an elaborate gambling scheme that's made millions. They're just not high-profile enough for a .

To be honest, I don't think it's Auburn either, unless it 100% proves the Cam Newton allegations and introduces new allegations because it just wouldn't be spectacular enough to be considered a "10". Most people already assume shady stuff went on with Newton, so it wouldn't be groundbreaking enough for the public to consider it a perfect investigative report.

I have a hunch it will be a program like Florida State, LSU, or Texas, where we've heard hints of possible wrongdoing from the media, but we haven't seen any sort of conclusive proof. Honestly, I would consider a story involving a supposedly-clean program like Texas a "10". For a story about FSU or LSU doing something wrong, it'd have to be incredibly captivating.

Well, because I actually heard about this story from someone else locally. I'm assuming that they're talking about the same story.

  • If it ends up not being a SEC West school then we can all send our hate mail to Chuck Oliver at Chuck@680thefan.com

He has made mistakes in the past but he doesn't just throw stuff out there to see if it sticks either.

I honestly hope there's no story because if there is a HUGE story then the "digging" will just continue with all schools. It'll no longer be about playing football each week but what scandal is the current buzz. I don't want to see TMZ walking around every campus trying to sensationalize every possible story.
