Apparently something went down in Tuscaloosa at the administration is really cracking down on fraternity hazing. What are tBB's opinions on hazing? Personally, I have nothing against hazing, as long as it accomplishes the goal of bringing the rookie class together and making them feel connected with the rest of the organization. It's supposed to be a team building thing IMO, like the non-military version of boot camp or the non-athletic version of two-a-days. However, when it crosses that line into nothing more than a bunch of old, drunk assholes abusing freshman (which is weird, if you ask me) then I think it goes too far.
They have shut down pledging at one time or another every year at UA since I was a newboy in 2004. It's never been anything that serious as far as I can remember. Hazing is kind of stupid but I guess it does make your pledge class closer and it can be pretty damn funny when its not you getting f'd with. I just don't approve of anyone getting seriously hurt or humiliated (pissed on, spit on, etc.). That shit just never flew with me. I just liked having a personal bitch for a semester. Didn't do laundry, clean my room, or run an errand for the entire fall...

My views as well on hazing. I pledged in 05 and so much of the worst part of hazing were sophomores trying to get revenge from the previous year.
Complete horseshit on the University's part right now. Absolutely livid with the whole situation
Punishing the whole system is ludicrous. If they don't manage to actually curb any of the bad hazing (that only goes on at a few organizations), the rest of the greek system should fight back IMO.
Pledges need to suck it up and deal it. It happens so just do it and forget about it. Kids think they should be entitled and handed whatever they want without going through some things to prove they deserve it. I got hazed a lot and it does bring your class closer. I won't even go into military hazing I had to put up with for a year in my unit. Man up and overcome.
I think it's nobody's business how frats run their organization.
So, in your opinion, there's no line to be drawn. Even for those guys that "manned up" and died of alcohol poisoning and shit like that? No one in this thread is saying get rid of hazing, dude, chill out.
In my pledge class we had to eat grapes out of each others butts and make out and blow each other and stuff. It probably sounds ghey to someone that doesn't understand Fraternities or how bonding works but it totally wasn't ghey... I'm actually laughing as I write this thinking about all the jizz I took down.
Anyway, we're going to crush LSU this weekend. I just know it.
What's going on at Bama?
I got hazed pretty bad. Most of it was funny looking back but some was just stupid. Its a lot easier now.
The issue at Bama, from my understanding, is that a couple fraternities did some stupid shit (the over the top kind of hazing I think serves no purpose) and instead of just cracking down on them, they've suspended pledgeship for all the fraternities on campus. That's how I understood it. Ich can probably clarify.
The military is laughing at this situation right now
Think its dumb as hell, one of the reasons I wouldn't pledge. I'm not going to do what someone tells me to do, just so they can get a laugh out of it or whatever.
Sophomores are always the worst but if they get too out of line there's all ways the "road trip."
Life after college may be rough on you
What actually happened? Ichabod, u know?
Seems like way back the UoA didn't really get involved, but there was something crazy back in the 80s or 90s that happened and they had to. Then it started getting looked at nationally somewhere along the way. Seems like I remember a story in the paper about some kids having to "surf" on top of a car on the interstate back in that time frame. If I were a pledge, I'd take my chores and getting you a mountain dew at 3am like a man, but nothing goes in my ass and I'm not surfing on the interstate.
Exactly. There's a pretty defined line between being treated like a rookie (being someone's bitch for the year, being the DD for upperclassmen, build sh!t, whatever) and being put in a stupid, dangerous situation (like those guys that die from alcohol poisoning, buttchugging?, car surfing, what have you). The latter is WAY extreme and in no way the norm, but it does happen and it should be phased out. The people that say, "Just suck it up and do it!" regardless of the task scare me a little, to be honest. There's also a pretty defined line between understanding the punishment and choosing to do it and being some sort of masochistic robot.
In an organazation with strong leadership, fine. In one with weak (or no) leadership, dangerous as hell.

Let me preface with this by saying there is no elephant walk, no gay shit and no sexual encounters between pledges. It's a joke we make and it seems everyone has believed it.
Anyways, I believe it was before Fall Break, the Dean of Students, Tim Hebson, called for a university wide suspension of pledgeship. He said he felt it was best that all Greek members should just focus on school events especially with midterms for the pledges. This had never been done before.
This Tuesday, the Greek hating Crimson White ran a piss poor story based on one source. It cited the source anonymously as a pledge of a fraternity and the source went into detail with what goes on during pledgeship. One source, one fraternity. The source described a task "bows and toes" and said he had heard where people could be kicked during it.
The article was seriously one of the most biased writings that I've seen in my life. One source is what they used, nothing to back the source on and they ran it. However, it was a large article and I'm guessing the Director of Greek Affairs felt the need to officially end pledgeship today because of that and several calls to the hazing hotline.
Some of the Crimson White's tweets today:
The Crimson White @TheCrimsonWhite
Breaking: All fraternity pledge activities are to be suspended as of 1 p.m. Today, according to UA Greek Affairs
The Crimson White @TheCrimsonWhite
"The pledge program is over. It's not going to be brought back. It's done." - Kat Gillan, Director of Greek Affairs on fall pledge period
Later the University issued a statement saying that Theta Chi had pledges past curfew. They also cited the calls to the hazing hotline.
I do not agree with physical hazing whatsoever. It's stupid and hurting someone just ruins a good experience for everyone. Everyone always gets on the negatives of pledgeship like having to do someones bitch work and such. What they forget is all the positives that pledgeship brings like comradeship, accountability, loyalty, etc.
But the pussification of America continues and now pledgeship will be a joke. Again, the military is laughing at the University's idea of hazing.
There is a line to be drawn, I never said there shouldn't be but in my experience with these types of complaints it is usually related to a pledge getting his ego bruised. I also never said anything about getting rid of hazing. How do you take something you read in a message board and decide a poster needs to chill out? Anyone that knows me knows when I'm not "chilled" and this isn't one of those times. It takes more than 18 year old brat to get my BP up.
Where else in life will I be forced to do most of the shit they do when hazing?
I'm fine with having pledges clean up or do some chores and stuff like that, but some of the other crap is just dumb and I wouldn't do it.
All it takes is for one pussy to bellyache then *POOF*... It gone....
Being forced to alcohol poisoning is not hazing, it is reckless endangerment. If you are told to carry 2.00 in quarters and have a lighter at all times or like you said be a DD then just suck it up and deal with it.. maybe I have just been through more crap than most and "bows and toes" just seems petty to me; which I have before too on bottle caps filled with cayenne pepper sauce screaming the Ranger creed...
What kind of grapes?
I never said I had a problem with that. So I'm not sure what we're arguing about.
I've been reading through the "discussion" going on on the CW's Facebook page between Greek supporters and non-Greek supporters and all I can say is this: There are few more meaningless topics than this that result in as much elitism and arrogance, from both sides. Being in a fraternity doesn't make you a better person. Being independent doesn't make you a smarter person. Jesus Christ, of all the things to get up in arms about, who the hell cares? Just go enjoy college for Christ's sake.
