UF lost their star DT and SS. Also lost 2 of their starting LBs. However, they return their 2nd star DT, the best group of cornerbacks and defensive ends in the SEC, and have a decent group replacing the safety position. I'll give the edge to UF since they lost 4 starters compared to 5 or 6. Depth at LB and S will be young but definitely talented.

I think all the elite SEC teams lost stars... (Bama, UF, LSU, UGA)
Yeah, and all these teams will reload of you look at recruiting. If these kids live up to expectations, all teams with a stout defense should continue without too much dropoff.
I believe it is coaching mostly. Muschamp greatly improved UF's D, Saban's D are always tops in the country, Chavis is solid one of the best coordinators in the country. I'm hoping Grantham gets it together. We can stop a run for nothing. Of course our DLine has greatly underachieved but we got a new DLine cooach so we'll see
i wont put UF ahead of LSU yet. its close but im giving LSU the nod right now
UF's DT depth is suspect. Ends look good but the middle is vulnerable to injury. Easly goes down and you guys might be in trouble. Linebackers look solid but nothing amazing and depth is average. Corners are outstanding but Safety is a question mark.
i just like LSU's defense more right now over UF. once i see UF's guys in action my opinion might change though. for me every defense starts up front and LSU's DL group is just really impressive
FSU Ambassador to the masses
After Ferguson and Johnson, who does LSU have @ DT, that you are so impressed with?
If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.
LSU lost like 13 players on defense from last year
Our corners will be top 5 in the nation
And our DLine will be better then last year
Haha well I started with LSU and Georgia, because I think they lost the most starters. I thought about including Florida off the bat, but they didn't lose as many (same with South Carolina).
Idk if I have this right:
LSU- Montgomery, Logan, Mingo, Edwards (not a starter, but good), Minter, Simon, Reid = 6 starters + 1 key contributor (2 if you count Downs)
Georgia- Jenkins, Geathers (not a starter), J. Jones, Ogletree, Cummings, Smith (starter?), Rambo, Williams = 6 sure starters + 2 contributors
Florida- Floyd, Hunter (starter?), Okine (starter?), Bostic, Jenkins, Elam, Evans = 5 starters + 2 not sures
South Carolina- Jerideau, Taylor, Wilson, Swearinger....anyone else?

We lost all of our 2 deep at LB. none were great players though. Sutton will be better at DE than Taylor was. Should have a great DL, good secondary, and a total mystery at LB.
Okine was barely even a role player.
im going with LSU's defensive pedigree. they reload EVERY SINGLE YEAR on defense. every offseason we all speculate that they will take a step back and then some no-name guy appears and becomes a 1st rounder. their DL play has been consistenly good for so long that i have to give them the nod. Chavis is a great DC and knows exactly how to use his guys to maximize their talent
its not a knock on UF im just picking LSU RIGHT NOW and i will reform my opinion once the season starts and the bullets start flying. i also mentioned that your corners were excellent in case you missed that in my first post.
your DL will be better than last year but outside of easley, bullard, and fowler i dont see a proven impact player. Jacobs was solid, Powell is a major question mary right now coming off his injuries. after that its a bunch of guys that are unknowns
LSU will probably have a top 15 or so defense nationally this year due to early season struggles. I like our talent and depth, but there will be blown assignments due to the youth. UF replaces a lot as well, but they're in a better position to start the season with an elite defense.
Honestly, the whole SEC should be down defensively next year. South Carolina and UF may very well be the two best D's in the conference.

I got you
Orr will be big time this year if he stays out of trouble
And Cox Jr. will have an impact big time IMO
Then like you said, you have Powell who is probably 50/50
And (I know you guys don't want to hear it) but we expect Cummings to be a good role player
Yeah, maybe I should have just asked "what top-half SEC team, not named Alabama, will have the best defense?" I figured South Carolina was returning quite a bit, because I wasn't too familiar with your LBs to begin with.
Oops, forgot about McCray. I take it OLB & S are your only concerns?
will be interesting to see if cummings can develop into the player we thought we were going to get. injuries really held him back at FSU and once Jernigan got there it really spelled his demise. how many years does he have for you guys? 2?
LB depth and Safety
Just S. I like our OLB unit with Powell, Ball, Taylor and Kitchens. Plus, we just had an early enrollee who I think will finish as one of our greatest LBs ever, Daniel McMillian. Kid has rare tools.
Ronald Powell or Jeremi Powell?
Safety is the only big question mark for UF.
DL will be the most complete group since the '06 'chip team. (Pass rush + run)
LBers are young w/experience (not green at all), athletic, and bring the hammer. Only thing needed here is a leader. Powell or Morrison, or both most likely.
S- green here (but there is some experience in Riggs, Watkins, etc) Not worried about this group with it being Muschamp's unit
UF isn't super deep w/experiece @ LB or Safety. So the defense might not weather the type of 3 and out storms, like they did last season. Or those 2nd half comebacks. The Offense will need to help them stay more fresh this yr.

Ronald. I forgot all about Jeremi.
