Before the season is over?
Plenty in the media and that fan base believe he will be let go after the Kentucky game to give Paul Petrino or who ever they name interim HC two weeks to rally the team and prep for Ole Miss.
You have to do something to spark life in the team at this point otherwise this team could go 1-11 and you're asking a coach to put together a recruiting class in 2.5 months after a cataclysmic season.
What coach would leave his job to go to an Arkansas program that is quickly crumbling? Some things to consider:
Petrino didn't recruit well;
You essentially won't sign a class in 2012 (see Auburn 2009);
The AD that hired you will likely be gone within a year or two of your arrival;
Your first year on the job you'll have to go to LSU and Alabama, so you might as well start the season 0-2;
Your state doesn't produce a lot of D1 prospects;
In year 3 Kentucky rotates off and Georgia, Florida or Tennessee will rotate on (P.S. and you'll be headed back to Baton Rouge & Tuscaloosa).
Paul Petrino sucks too.

petrino should have gone earlier anyway
well obvioulsy as on ole miss fan i hope JLS stays until after the 27th but hey i wouldnt blame arky for getting someone new, problem is who do you get? the perk for jls is that its not like this is going to jeopardize his career, so what up and coming coach is going to take this job mid season and try to turn around this team on a dime? i certainly wouldnt, granted if someone could turn em around on a dime and get them bowl eligible it would make that coach a name quickly but thats alot to gamble on, IMO
They will look incredibly stupid firing an interim coach. But at this point he's becoming a huge embarrassment. They are screwed either way IMO.
There is no way in hell that Arky becomes bowl eligible this year. I get what your saying about someone, maybe, trying to get their name out there quickly, but they aren't going to a bowl game. They still have LSU, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Auburn and Mississippi State. All of which I think are better than Arkansas and considerably so.
oh no doubt, thats what im saying though that is the only way that a young coach could take the job and not possibly ruin his career early....arkansas just needs to ride this season out (its tough but i am an ole miss fan, ive ridden several of these seasons out) and have someone lined up to take over as soon as season ends, taking over this program mid season is a pitfall for any coach
By the way,
Ole Miss is the best team that we have played this year. You guys came to play last night.
thanks, i was at a buddies house and his dad is a bama fan and he was amazed at how i was happy as hell when we scored a second time despite being down by such a large margin ha i know some people say moral victories dont mean anything but im telling you i would rather see us play til the clock reads zeros and lose to an amazing bama team than see us beat utep and central arkansas but play pitifully. last season we would have layed down and we just flat didnt playt the last three games last year. but yall have a great team and the only possible stumbling block i see for yall is maybe LSU until the SECCG
would Phil Fulmer have been a better choice than John Smith ??
I don't think it's even close. After that "Smile" press conference, it's obvious that this man is only hanging on by a small thread. I know that he was only a stopgap, but Smith has checked out.
It's not like Phil Fulmer exactly sucked during his career at UT.

if they tell smith to step aside, they aren't going to hire a new coach. no coach is coming in mid season. they will just "promote" a coach on the current staff and hope things change.
id still hate to be "promoted" to the face of that shipwreck
true , surprised that they didnt make a pass at Phil for the one year gig but they must have had other plans
makes alot of sense to me ; need a change at this point and i think you can kiss Mr Smith's head coaching job prospects down the drain for a couple of years anyway
Why fire him now? Nothing of consequence to play for this season, at this point, anyway.... Let the guy finish out the year and take the time to go find/hire the Best available. If you fire him now, you dont gain all that much IMO.
true , who would you guys like to see as HC starting next year ?
If you call Sonny Dykes or Gus Malzahn tonight and tell Sonny or Gus: Job is yours roughly the same salary as Bobby Petrino, but you have to come on board after the Kentucky game. Either crys at the press conference says sorry to the players and is in Fayetteville shortly after.

not sure they would take it under those circumstances nor are you sure you want those guys as your new head coach ?
Malzahn will not be the next coach. There's a greater chance that Vince Lombardi is named the head coach than Malzahn.
they don't have to fire him, there is a clause in his contract that they can reassign him to another position. they have 7 games left and could make a bowl game if they can turn things around with a new coach.
No way they make a bowl. They would have to go through the next stretch of games that I listed earlier without any more than two losses. LSU and South Carolina are sure fire losses and I think Ole Miss, Mississippi State and AU probably are as well.
