Could a NFL D-League work?

  • Thoughts?

I remember Goodell was talking about the possibility of this after he was asked a question about the new USFL.

  • I wouldn't watch it

Baseball and Basketball players need development. Especially baseball players.

The NFL needs young and cheap players to fill out the bottom half of rosters.

I don't think there would be enough players to give each franchise a d-team.

Baseball teams have several minor league teams because they need them, young players suck and they need somewhere to develop.

    I can't name a single d-league NBA team. I'm sure they're all horrible and un-watchable.

Football isn't a skill sport. If you can play you'll play.

I just don't think there is room for it.

I’m not sure each team would get a team but I see could each division getting one.

I agree with you though and I’m not sure it would be possible since the teams would most likely be made up of practice squad guy’s and I’m not sure if NFL teams would want that.

  • THat is what the Arena Football and CFL are for. They are their for players who could not make it in the NFL, and want to still play the game.

  • Basicly those 5th round guys that teams keep just because they drafted them would be playing in the D-league while vets fill out the rest of the depth spots. Nobody would watch them and nobody would care and all the NFL gets is more experienced depth. I don't really see the point.

  • Yes a NFL-D league would work if done right. The new USFL looks like its on the right path and it seems its getting some guidance from the NFL

Heck man throw that bad boy on Fox Sports for 8 Saturdays in the spring/summer and it'll get attention as long as it isn't XFL like

  • The USFL is a fail. There's like 4 teams and had like a 3 game season last year. Will throwing the NFL shield make it that much better? The USFL is already filled with nfl rejects.

  • I think it would if it was done right. You could essentially do away with the concept of practice squads in the NFL, have them get real, in-game experience in the d-league, and sign them to five-figure d-league contracts. Call guys up and down like basketball and baseball do. Think about it, they could have franchises in places like Omaha, Las Vegas, Austin, Portland, Birmingham, Orlando - I think that would be really cool.

As far as number of people watching, I feel like if there were an NFL d-league in certain markets, with the NFL's branding and PR, more people would watch that than people that pay attention to the NBA's d-league or minor league baseball, and for that matter, also Arena Football, the CFL, and the UFL/USFL.

Problem is teams use their practice squad. Remember NFL rosters are alot smaller then college. Practice squat isn't just a place to stash players, it's to have enough guys to run a practice.

  • It would have to be a direct competitor to CFB not the NFL .. meaning they would have to restrict age to 18-22 and would have to pay into the millions for contracts .. thereby taking potential CFB players away .. making CFB a waste of time.
