MSU's site, Spartantailgate (aka, the Red Cedar Message Board or RCMB), has been largely independent over it's 15+ year history. We joined up with ESPN briefly before ultimately going with 247. As a result, myself and the other RCMB posters are kind of in the dark about the Rivals/247 history and split.
I realize one of the Rivals founders decided to leave and create 247; Sports Illustrated now uses 247's rankings, etc. Reading your posts, Rivals/247 was founded by Alabama fans? Any heads up would be appreciated.
On a side note, I truly enjoy the free-roaming, tailgate-esque feel that 247 has. It's great to be able to pop over to the Nebraska and Wisconsin sites and get their opinions on the upcoming season. I kind of wish that all the sites were open to posting to VIP members of another 247 site; sucks that I can't talk to Ohio State fans on their board, because our programs have a lot of ties and we recruit OH well. That aside, it's been a solid new environment for the MSU contingent (all 27 billion of us).

the guy that created rivals, Lucky sold rivals and left a couple years ago. had to wait out his non compete clause and then founded 247. now 247 is killing rivals and taking rivals' largest subscription based teams (bamaonline was largest on rivals network).
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Gotcha. I take it there's some bitterness between the two companies now? Who runs Rivals now? And why the hell is it so hard to get a Midwest analyst!

No bitterness on this end. A lot of guys over there that we are still very friendly with. But get it straight, this is a competition and they are our competitors. We're coming after them and I like our chances.

Haha, no problem. Like I said, tRCMB has been largely independent, so we've got zero loyalty to Rivals (other than the fact I think their rankings have been historically better than Scout or ESPN, so we tend to use their star rankings when talking about past classes). We're a 247 board now, and it looks like one of the top 2-3 on here. As I've said, glad to be a part of it.

About 18 months ago, there was a switch from the way it had worked on the board back then, to the way it is now. In the past, there were 5 or so poster-mods who would lock threads, delete posts, delete threads, etc. They were accountable for the way they operated, and answered for their actions. Things were fine.
Right about after the 2008 season, a large group of longtime Rivals posters felt that the censorship on the board had become too great. They broke away and formed their own board, the-mainboard.com. This board you could post porn, curse, basically do whatever the hell you wanted, but they still had some non-juvenile discussion over there. It's just a bit overwhelming.
With that crew, the last poster mod resigned. So Rivals, in their infinite wisdom decided to create two new poster mod positions, but not tell anyone who they were. They were simply designated, mod no 1 and mod no 2.
Enter the Vols, Bitch crowd. A small, but loud group of trolling Tennessee fans who after Kiffin was hired took over the board for nearly a year. Why this is important? This group outed a current poster of this board as mod no 1. That was pretty much the end of the poster mod.
With that came threads getting deleted and locked without explanation. People would be banned for minor infractions for long periods of time. Emails for reinstatement and questions about the way things were being handled went unanswered.
Then came the Jeff Lee posting a posters personal information in an article saga. Rivals refused to address that as well.
Basically what happened, is that over time, the level of customer service deteriorated to an almost prisoner level. You never found out why things were happening, you simply had to accept that they were.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Holy $&%^
I had no idea it was that bad. On tRCMB, we've had 8-12 poster mods just for our fanbase, plus a language filter (till the 247 switch, prefer to have one, FWIW) and no porn. I can't imagine 2 mods for 40+ fanbases. Wow, I'm glad I never signed up for MSU's Rivals site. . . . yeesh.

Dbl was mod number 1.
Also almost every former mod of the rivals board now are active members of the-mainboard.com
that site averages approx 300,000 page views a day.
considering its run by two former posters on rivals and funded purely from poster donations, its been quite the success.
Although many older posters from various sites seem to think its a bunch of teenagers. The average age of a poster on the-mainboard is around 23. With the oldest poster being in his 60's and the youngest around 16.
