Crossovers

  • I've asked for car advice on here before and y'all were pretty helpful so I figured I'd ask again. I drive a Scion tC now and, while I love the car, it'll be time to change later this year. I'm more than likely headed to Atlanta and I don't think I'd be happy in a small, manual, 25mpg, 300-miles per fill vehicle. Now, you don't have to dumb it down for me: I'm well aware that listed mpgs are BS and that hoping for decent gas mileage out a crossover, but I want something larger than a car but smaller than an SUV (and definitely better for the buck than a full-sized SUV). Crossovers seem to fit the bill but, interestingly enough, I don't know too many people that have them and I haven't made a run out to dealerships yet to give a few a test drive.

    So, anyone got any suggestions? I'm open to any (semi-recent) years and makes. I would love to buy American if I could but, well, it is what it is.

  • If you don't mind me asking.. What kind of price range are you looking to be in? I can suggest a few based on that. My sister and Aunt both have nice crossovers and they both rave about them.

  • My wife and I have a Cadillac SRX and a Chevrolet Traverse.

    Both are great and drive wonderful. I'd say both are about 18-26 MPG city to highway.

    I will probably drive a crossover from now on. I'm 6'4" but hate the way SUVs drive. Had a Suburban and Tahoe before these.

    Traverse 30-40K depending on features.
    SRX 42-55K

  • If you're moving to Atlanta and are worried about gas milage and gas prices, I'd scratch the crossover and go with a car like a civic or hybrid of some kind. Atlanta traffic is murder and will murder your gas milage regardless of what you drive.

    Honestly, you may be better off keeping your car for when you need the space and buying a small/midsize motorcycle for everyday commuting.

    For the money, the Traverse is the better deal. GM did a nice job with both, but the difference between the two does not justify the extra 15k, IMO.

    However, for the OP, I think the Equinox would be a better bet. It sounds like he doesn't want anything too big and the Traverse is kinda long. shrug Plus, it comes 10k cheaper and it sounds like price is going to be a consideration.

  • I have a loaded Equinox and I love the car thought it doesn't get the gas mileage that I'd hoped to get. Also I have the All Wheel drive version since I live in Colorado.

    I agree with getmyjive. SRX is more luxurious, but the Traverse is great. Better value.

    Ok. gotcha.. My Aunt has a chevy equinox.. The decked out version.. She loves her car.. My sister has the Acura crossover.. Whatever it is called, can not remember.

    The reason I'm thinking of a crossover vs. a car, even though the car would get better mileage as far as in-the-city driving goes, is that I'll probably be making a decent number of trips back to Alabama to see family and friends and would like the added benefit of the extra space a crossover offers without stumbling into the SUV market.

    I actually had considered the motorcycle idea. If I get a place not far from a MARTA station, I probably will end up just biking it.
