Cyrus Kouandjio is a great person

  • Just wanted to share this with the board. I was diagnosed with leukemia on Friday, and Cyrus, a guy I've never met, messages me on facebook wishing me luck and saying he's praying for me. I'm 26 years old so maybe I'm a little too old to get star struck by a college kid, but it just caught me off guard. I thought it was a great gesture by a great young man.

  • I've met him a few times, really nice guy. Like Fuzz said, stay strong and beat that ish man! My dad's had AML since 2009 and he's still fighting, so this hits home for me. God bless man, keep us updated

    That was a great gesture by the young man. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Good luck with the battle ahead. Ill say some prayers for you and please keep us updated,

    I want to add one more thing besides well wishes, rtaburn. I'm not a regular on The Blue Board, but I've been on message boards long enough to know, whether you're a friend or foe of the different fan bases, we're all family here and it helps to lean on whatever you can at certain times and people will give you support in those times, if that's what you need.

    Don't be too proud to not vent or bend an ear on here if you need to talk about this.

  • Perkaslut linked to this thread on the Iowa Hawkeye Board and I thought I would add my two cents.

    In 2004 I was diagnosed with the Big C. Specifically a Malignant GIST tumor in my stomach. I had surgery in 2004 to remove the tumor and a second surgery in May of 2005 to excise any residual cancer in surrounding tissues. It has been 7 years now and I seem to be Cancer free. I lost 100 lbs due to those surgeries. This past summer my Kidneys shutdown after a rather rapid deterioration over the last two years. I am on Peritoneal Dialysis and everything is going well. My point in sharing my medical history is that over the past 7 years, no matter what was happening, I stayed positive. No matter how bad it gets, we can be thankful that new medical wonders are found every day that bode well for our recover. The treatment for the GIST tumor was a new medicine that did not exist before 1998.

    Keep the faith. Be positive. Don't allow your self to wallow in a , "Why me" moan. Fight this battle and win it. You have every reason to believe recovery is just down the road. Stay strong. Stay patient. You will survive.

    I read a wonderful book about the history of Cancer treatment, "The Emperor of All Maladies." It is an amazingly good read for such a dry subject. The concluding chapter talks about the discovery of the drug I took, Gleevex, to help fight off the GIST tumor. It will buttress our faith that recover is not only possible, but actually very likely.   • I feel for you man. I got diagnosed this summer with a cancer called blastic plasma cytoid dendrtic cell neoplasm and they treat it very similar to AML lukemia. I have been through a 30 month chemo treatment in August, a hydac chemo treatment in October and Im currently in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant that I received 11 days ago. Im extremely blessed that they found a donor so quickly and my body has responded well to the treatments. The key is staying positive now matter how devastating the news is. Im the first patient for all my doctors here at UAB but they believe that the treatments can work and can be cured. Try to stay off the internet when it comes to reading medical journals...you are not a statistic but an individual case.Keep yourself distracted with day to day activities. If you need to vent, Im on here almost everyday and you PM me any time. It can be tough but if you have a good support system and stay positive you can be cured.

    That's really awesome to hear that Cyrus wrote you a note. During times like this you really see how awesome people can be! We have a great distraction coming up on January 7th. Roll Tide!
