DIRECTV vs Viacom

I read it was about 60 cents per subscriber extra. I also called them and received the following.

20 bucks off a month for a year Upgraded HD receiver to HD/DVR receiver for free Starz/encore free for 6 months NFL sunday ticket for free

They were very giving lol. The only problem is you have to agree to a 1 year commitment if you want the sunday ticket or box upgrade. I have 3 kids under 6 so this really sucks. They love them some toons and directv was more then happy to oblige to my demands. I also found out that if you terminate your contract to goto another sattelite/cable company you pay 20 dollars per month for every month left on your contract. I had four months left so i could have paid 80 dollars to get rid of my contract. Hope this helps

That's a better deal than I got. $20 off for a year is pretty impressive. I was pretty nice about it though, didn't feel like being a jerk. Did you complain a lot about it or just stay on the line for a while to get a better offer?

    I was able to get:

$10 off my bill for 2 months (they initially only offered $5 for one month)
    Showtime for 6 months free
    Starz for 6 months free

    no

So they should just pay 30% more for a group of channels that are in decline? That would mean they care about customers? Even though giving Viacom what they want, would raise the bills of all of their customers.. You're sense of customer service is twisted.

They are fighting for the ability of the customer to be able to pick which channels they want to have, instead of paying for the whole "Family of Networks" under the Viacom Umbrella. Why would you pay for Logo, TVLand, and CMT if you never watch those stations? Because people ,like yourself, just fall in line and agree to anything.

Dish Network and AMC are going through the same thing right now, and AMC has far better programming than any of Viacom's awful networks.

i refuse to believe that those channels are on the decline. you know how many black folks watch bet. how many white folks watch cmt mtv. then you got spike all the cartoon channels and whatever else. no way they are on the decline. where did you get that from

No, i was very nice and they were too. They initially offered me 5 bucks a month as well but since i had auto bill pay they tacked on the extra 15 bucks to make it 20 bucks a month. Just so everyone knows if you do auto bill pay you dont pay your monthly HDTV fee either it becomes free. I told them i had to call my wife and see how she felt a couple times and they gave me a number and a pin so i could get in touch quickly. They first offered me sunday ticket but i declined and said i'd rather have movie channels or an upgraded HD/DVR receiver if that were possible. I thought i would get one or the other but they quickly agreed to both. I then made sure i wouldn't be under a new contract until my new equip was installed on monday. Once i figured that out i told them i'd talk to my wife and let them know sunday. Well i called sunday and said that my wife didn't really want to be under a 2 year contract just for equipment upgrades and asked if i could get the sunday ticket for free as well. Now they did make me hold awhile on that one but when they came back it was no trouble and they agreed to hook it up.

My personal belief is the closer they get to making a deal the less stuff they are going to hand out. My first call was saturday and the sunday ticket and 20 bucks off was the first offer i received before i started negotiating lol.
