David Stern is trying to help ruin the USA team in the Olympics

  • I cannot wait for this man to step down as commisioner

Proposed NBA Olympics age change not popular among current team members | Fourth-Place Medal - Yahoo! Sports

From the blog Fourth-Place Medal: The USA Basketball Men's National Team earns a lot of attention, what with many global icons playing together in the pursuit of national glory. It's like an All-Star game, just with more competitive drive and shiny medals as prizes. Yet, … Continue reading →

  • I personally think that it makes all the sense in the world when you look at the success of the league that he is commissioned to run. Just look at what happened to Kyrie Irving and Blake Griffin right now. I'm sorry but when your league's owners are paying the players the type of money that the owner's he is hired to represent are paying them, injuries aren't something that you want to see happen in international competition.

I understand that it's the Olympics and al,l and the players should be able to at least play once, but if I were an owner, I would take the approach that Cuban has been stated on making. If I have a guy under a serious 8 figure contract (of guaranteed money) I don't want him risking the chance on getting injured and fvcking up his career with my team or the potential success of my team.

  • Olympics should be U23 for all nations and FIBA World Championship should be for any age. Just like soccer (football).

But what happened to patriotism and national pride? Or just pride in general? I felt the same way when the Colts had that chance to go for the undefeated season (after the Patriots failed) and benched a lot of guys and lost at the end of the season... On the one hand you have money, on the other hand you have pride, fame, and immortality. Is money the end all, be all for everything now? That's sad IMO.

You can injure yourself lifting/training and playing pickup games, like Kobe said. Its not like these guys are sitting in a bubble during the offseason.

I'm not saying that I agree completely. I'm saying that the commissioner of the league represents the owners of his league. When you think of it from that perspective, his logic makes all of the sense in the world. He has to do what is best for the interest of the people that pay his salary. Does it make it right? Absolutely not and I also understand where Kobe is coming from.

Still unless there is a clause that says if you decide to play in the Olympics and get seriously injured and can't play that it's the players wallets that are going to be lighter and not the owners, then I think the commish is right on. There may be a clause like that in their contracts but if there is, I don't know about it.

  • I hate the idea. Only reason why Americans don't care about the rule in soccer is because most Americans really don't care about soccer. I also think it is a bit short sighted. In Soccer the World Cup supersedes everything. Every league title is a distant second or third to soccer fans. Right now the NBA Championship is the biggest achievement in hoops, the Olympics are almost a glorified all-star game to most Americans. If they turn the World Cup of Basketball into the World Cup of Soccer I think it works against the popularity of individual basketball teams.

Agree with you, but still disagree with Stern. He is also in the market of developing the NBA at home and abroad, which the Olympics has been extremely successful at with NBA stars available. It also could behoove these owners to have players that have gained more experience playing in a playoff-like atmosphere. Not to mention merchandise/ticket/television sale increases from increased pub of said player.

  • There is a reaso they changed the rules in 92, and that was because other teams were using professional players while the U.S was using college kids and we were not faring very well. Now that we have been dominating they want to kick NBA players out, and bring college kids back since it is hard for them to beat the U.S

This isn't coming from the other countries. This is Stern's idea. And the goal is to have all Olympic teams be 23 and under so the best players in the world play at the World Cup of Hoops instead of the Olympics. The NBA wants to make more money from it's players playing international ball. They get nothing from the Olympics but get a slice of the World Cup.

  • Meanwhile we would be playing 30 year olds from other countries.

This was Mark Cubans idea btw.

Of course the owners and Stern want this. They don't want their stars/money risking injury. It's ALWAYS about $$$$

But they fail to realize that Olympic basketball was one of the ways that the NBA has become so popular worldwide.
