Words evolve over time and to me calling someone a fag is the same as calling someone an asshole. I totally agree. To me it doesn't even really mean homosexual anymore.
But it is sort of the same phenomenon. Latch onto a word and use it in your group and act offended when other people use it. I think it is counter-intuitive to try and establish words that you can only use in groups. If you're using it to describe yourself why can't others? You can make any word an insult by intonation and context.
