Dean's List/High GPA

  • How important does everyone think it is to have a high GPA or makes Dean's list? Does it help that much when it comes to getting a job?

  • Depends on the company, really. Some companies have cutoffs for a minimum GPA to get an interview.

The basic rule is a high GPA can help you land the interview, but it is not going to get you the job.

Yeah, pretty much. If you're looking for an internship or an entry level position, they'll look at academic achievement (not necessarily just the GPA) and relevant experience. Those will be the first two things they use to make the first cut. It does help, but it won't be the only factor.

    Final Countdown

  • As someone who has hired two project managers in the last month, I don't care about gpa. A low one would be a flag, but I really care more about work experience than gpa. If I hired someone without work experience, aptitude would be more important than gpa, but gpa would definitely get you in for an interview.

  • Having a good GPA is important, but all that "Dean's List" stuff is worthless IMO. My professor in my business management masters class told us to take off anything on your résumé that "everyone" would have, which includes Dean's/President's Lists.

  • If it's a high GPA put it on there, if it's not leave it off

    Status

  • The only time GPA mattered at all for me was getting into graduate school and then my PhD program, and both times GRE scores and my published research was far more important. I do quite a bit of hiring myself and I never even look at it(unless it is particularly bad). IMO in most fields as long as your GPA is "good," it is way way down on the list of things a hiring manager is concerned about. For the sake of brevity my current resume does not include any indicators of my GPA because at this point experience is far more important.

  • 3.0/3.2/3.5

those are benchmarks for certain jobs in finance. you want to be as high as possible in an economy like this, but i would try and get above a 3.0 at the least

Agree here. but I have not hired direct out of college in quite a while, just because the jobs i have been hiring for are more Sr. Level positions, and in those areas, it never comes up.

to be honest, if I were to bring on Colledge grads, I would definitely ask about lower GPA scores in certain fields to generate discussion on those areas that were not "so great" and find out (if possible) why the grades were lower and how that person has learned from the experience and how will that affect your professional growth.

  • Not at all. Worked as a high level multi-site GM for 2 fortune 500 companies and neither ever asked anything about GPA or deans list. But, they did care about the fact that I was a student-athlete in college. Said it demonstrated the leadership quality. Good People skills out weigh how good someone's GPA is everytime
