  • This isn't just Notre Dame ruining things. First of all, it's not like they are going to pick and choose who they play in the ACC. They are basically going to play every team rotating on a 2-3 year cycle. Good for the ACC to demand something in return for football unlike what they Big East demanded all those years.

There are many rivalries that have been ruined over conference expansion and changes over the years and it sucks. Michigan and Notre Dame may not have played more than Notre Dame and Purdue or Notre Dame and Navy, but it has definitely become a much more meaninghful game for the country, IMO.

OU/Nebraksa was ruined for no reason when the Big12 was formed.

Texas/aTm has ended because of petty arguments when aTm left for the SEC. No reason that game couldn't have been saved...or at last played on an every other year basis, which I hope they are able to accomplish one day.

Kansas/Mizzou needs to be played....especially on the basketball side.

These are all rivalries that need to be held on to, IMO in some form.

Of the 3, ND has played Mich the least (33) and Purdue the most (80). They have played MSU 69 times.

    Picking nits, but....
Michigan leads the series 23-16-1 for a total of 40 games. The two met first in 1887, which also happened to be the very first football game Notre Dame ever played.

The Michigan-ND game is a great rivalry of two fantastic schools, close in proximity (175 miles apart), and steeped in tradition. It's a good match-up for college football. It has more mass appeal than ND-Purdue or ND-MSU, that's for sure.

There needs to be respect, and passion for these rivalries to survive...also helps if both programs are powerful in the conference. When you make zero demands, but insist on maintaining rivalries, they will remain.

Nice to see that both USC and Notre Dame used their clout to keep this rivalry going.

So you enjoy crappy matchups, watered down out of conference schedules, and the end of natural rivalries.

You should take Mark Emmerts job. I bet your on-field product would be riveting.

    1. Michigan fans said you don't care, so why do you care enough to reply?
    2. Michigan is already a crappy matchup. Michigan has beaten ND 23 times, although you don't care abt ND. Television thinks it is a crappy matchup now because it generates little revenue (which is the reason why michigan is being dropped).
    3. A natural rivalry? You two took a hiatus for 35yrs one time, is that a natural rivalry?
    4. Watered down conference schedule is funny. If ND were in the B10, it would actually bring some legitimacy to your conference, especially as ND has railed two of the better teams in your conference this year. Since ND is going to a conference with 2 ranked teams (fsu & clemson) and not to a conference with 1 (excluding sanctioned OSU), ACC is watered down? That doesn't say much for your own conference, does it?

    You don't read/comprehend too well.

    1) A (singular) Michigan fan made the claim and started the thread. Not all M fans agree. I read and commented after reading ignorant statements such as yours.

    2) this is a baseless (and pretty stupid) opinion with zero facts to back it up.

    3) What other criteria do you need to be a natural rivalry.

    4) I said watered down OUT OF CONFERENCE GAMES

You should take your time and put more thought into your posts. You come off pretty uninformed.

    1. Fair enough.
    2. Tv rights are the name of the game these days. ND started playing Michigan for this thing called money. UM avg 110k per home game and tix revenue was huge back then. The tv rating for this past michigan/nd game was 4.0 . This was off 20% from last year and the lowest rating since 2007. ND/Miami is projected as 9.7, just for example. Again, tv revenue is the name of the game.
    3. Teams just don't stop playing each other for 35yrs in a natural rivalry.
    4. ND will be able to add whomever it wants as OOC games. From ND's perspective this is golden, as they have the autonomy to choose whomever they want from texas to idaho state. Most teams use this format to their advantage (reference any SEC schedule).

    Michigan fans exist?

Well, they show up ITT to say they don't care abt ND. Their team did not appear to care abt ND either, after this past wkend's 6-13 loss. Its ironic they don't care, yet they have to state ITT that they do not care.

ND doesn't appear to need to play Michigan. While I am anything but a ND fan (quite the opposite), ND doesn't need to play michigan any longer. Besides tradition, what does Michigan bring?

I'm not surprised that ND Miami is so high with the renewal of catholics vs. convicts. If ND really wanted to make the big bucks, they would drop MSU and/or Purdue and keep us. They really want to keep the schedule easier now that they have to play ACC teams as well as USC and Stanford.

Apparently you're gathering all your "facts" from a recent article by Joe Dorish of the New Jersey Football History Examiner. Nowhere in his recent article does he cite any facts or sources. It's 100% opinion. And he did NOT say the Miami/ND game this year is projected to generate a 9.7.....he said that's what the game drew 22 years ago

You can ask 1000 longtime Michigan fans and 1000 longtime ND fans and you will get 1000 differing opinions on why the two stopped playing each other after the 1943 season:
    - ND tried extending the 3rd period in the 1942 game from 15 minutes to 23 so the Irish could catch up. Michigan took exception to that
    - Michigan has always tried to keep ND out of the Big 10 conference
    - Fielding Yost was a racist
    - Michigan decided to stop playing the Irish after the 1943 game, where #1 ND beat #2 Michigan
    - The War interfered and they never got around to scheduling the game again
    - ND didn't want to play Michigan
    - Michigan didn't want to play ND
    blah

ND will be able to choose whomever they want. They'll have 5 ACC games, Navy, and USC. They can add 3 tomato cans, virtually assuring themselves strong consideration for that #4 seed in the upcoming College Football Playoff System.

It's all a matter of opinion. Unless you're Jack Swarbuck, you can't sit here and definitively say WHY ND dropped the game.

agreed... Notre Dame now gets to pick and choose who they want to play from the ACC and can let the USCs and Michigans fall by the wayside. It's a win in every way for ND, but college football loses out

USC, Stanford, and Navy aren't going anywhere..

  • Stanford may actually be the very reason ND dropped M. It's not as long a rivalry (they've played 26 times since 1925 and mostly in the last 20 years) but it has a huge advantage over a game in Ann Arbor.

ND can now schedule a game in recruit-rich California every year, between SC and Stanford. ND doesn't need any more exposure in the Midwest, but can always expand their appeal out west by playing at least one game there every year.

In any event, it was ND who canceled the series. Obviously they have other plans they feel benefits them more. Too bad for those of us who enjoyed the rivalry.

So you think Michigan is a tougher opponent than USC and Stanford? Heck MSU has been carrying the state of Michigan for a few years now.. We have more history with the USC, MSU, and Navy. Remember Michigan's former coach/AD Yost is the one that tried to blackball ND. He got tired of the little school from Indiana beating his big bad Wolverines. Can't blame him we learned a lot from UM and took that and became a bigger national power than UM with a better fight song too boot..

They have more history with USC. As for Stanford and MSU, those schools will go up and down in the future. We will most likely sit at the top with the way we are recruiting and coaching. I would say that you guys are lucky that we had six turnovers and a missed fieldgoal otherwise we would have beat you soundly, but it would just sound like sour grapes.

EDIT: Can't tell if you're serious with the last part. We have more all time wins, a higher winning percentage, and the same amount of national championships as you guys.
