Remember Michigan's former coach/AD Yost is the one that tried to blackball ND. He got tired of the little school from Indiana beating his big bad Wolverines. Can't blame him we learned a lot from UM and took that and became a bigger national power than UM with a better fight song too boot..

They have more history with USC. As for Stanford and MSU, those schools will go up and down in the future. We will most likely sit at the top with the way we are recruiting and coaching. I would say that you guys are lucky that we had six turnovers and a missed fieldgoal otherwise we would have beat you soundly, but it would just sound like sour grapes.

EDIT: Can't tell if you're serious with the last part. We have more all time wins, a higher winning percentage, and the same amount of national championships as you guys.

And our 5 TO last year helped you squeek one out. blah

Stanford may actually be the very reason ND dropped M. It's not as long a rivalry (they've played 26 times since 1925 and mostly in the last 20 years) but it has a huge advantage over a game in Ann Arbor.

ND can now schedule a game in recruit-rich California every year, between SC and Stanford. ND doesn't need any more exposure in the Midwest, but can always expand their appeal out west by playing at least one game there every year.

In any event, it was ND who canceled the series. Obviously they have other plans they feel benefits them more. Too bad for those of us who enjoyed the rivalry.

We have been playing in California every year since we started playing Stanford every year. I'm sad to see the Michigan game off the schedule, it was by far the biggest game after USC..

    Point one = True
    Point 2 = True
    Point 3 = False

    Pre 1936
There were over 7 different systems for choosing a National Champion. If those years from 1869 to 1935 are included the winner is Princeton with 26 National Titles. Yale at 2nd with 18, Alabama with 13, Notre Dame with 13 and Michigan with 11.

    Post 1936
2 recognized bank of voters, AP and Coaches Poll
    Alabama has 9
    Notre Dame 8
    Oklahoma 7
    USC 7
Michigan is tied at 12th with 2 National Championships 1948 and 1997 (AP)

Those ranked ahead of or tied with UM from 5th through 13 are, Miami (5) Nebraska (5) Minnesota (4) Texas (4) Florida (3) LSU (3) Army (2) Auburn (2) Florida State (2)

I think we can all agree that going back further than 1936 is silly, and that even if we did, UM is behind ND in NC's
Because the first two points are in fact true, I must add that we have 7 Heisman winners to your 3 ^^

We come across this point with all fanbases. They want to pretend that national championships never happened because they were too long ago for their liking. It's only fair to look at the whole picture. If you really have 13 then why does the university of notre dame only say they have 11.

You did not read the post. NDU saying they have 11 is post 1936. For that same time period UM has 2. Now from 1869 till present, ND has 13, UM 11. The problem with NC's before The AP poll and Coaches poll is that there were many Champions for each year. That makes the Post 1936 a much more reliable number.

College Football Data Warehouse recognized national champions

    Notre Dame - 1919, 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988 = 13

    Michigan- 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, 1923, 1932, 1933, 1947, 1948, 1997 =11

Concerning what is recognized and what is claimed, In 1919 ND was 9-0 But due to the number of Ranking services this NC was recognized by only 2, while Texas A&M had 5 as Did Harvard. I can only guess that due to the number of ranking services ND did not claim this one, although it is among the recognized NC's. The same can be said for the 1920 undefeated team. In this year Nd was recognized by 2 ranking systems and California by 4.

In comparison in 1903 Michigan was recognized by only one ranking system and Princeton by 4, yet Michigan still claimed this as a NC. In 1904 Michigan again had 1 ranking system giving it a NC while Penn had 4. This seems to be an early trend for UM, as most often they did not recieve the abundance of ranking system NC;s but did claim them none the less.

That in a nutshell is the problem for anything pre AP and Coaches Poll, Some schools regardless of how many ranking systems gave them an NC, would claim them.

Concerning Points 2 That is an ever changing stat, do not be surprised if in the next few years that ND will again have the highest winning % currently we are only .4% behind.

So you think Michigan is a tougher opponent than USC and Stanford? Heck MSU has been carrying the state of Michigan for a few years now.. We have more history with the USC, MSU, and Navy. Wait, weren't you the guy who used to hang out in the Michigan thread on here? I always thought you were a pretty good poster, were you just trolling us the whole time?

Anyway, I'm bummed this series is going away for awhile but I hope it doesn't last forever. I thought it provided both teams a with pretty good early season barometer of how good they were and generated some very good games. I realize ND has to shore up some schedule space now that they'll be playing the ACC but I hope the series can resume at some point in the future.

Sucks to see good rivalries go away like this. They are going to find room for their home and home with Northwestern coming up and they'll continue the Navy rivalry, but drop the one that the rest of us find interesting. Not good for college football, IMO.

If you had NC before the 80s, y'all would be pounding your chests and screeching like banshees all over the internet...same with Heisman's and every other college football accolade y'all could claim.

All and all, by every measure a program can be judged in CFB history, both Michigan and Notre Dame are elite...with the Irish edging out the Wolverines in AA, drafted players, etc..

Notre Dame has been the most loyal of rivals...there were several times in history where they could have simply dropped our series..they gained nothing from continuing other than exposure to Los Angeles. Here's a news flash, the greatest number of Notre Dame alums are out here in California, so not exactly a reason to continue the rivalry.

The history between ND and Michigan is pretty ugly at times, but it is possible that it will resume at some point, in some manner. Maybe the Domers will take a 35 year break. biggrin

It's nice to see ND fans crowing so much over beating UM. It's a huge win for you guys. We were the better team statistically and based on the eye test, but we turned the ball over six times. You can't turn the ball over that many times and beat any team with a pulse. But congrats. One win out of every four tries against top tier programs is about right for ND these days.

Did you turn the ball over unassisted...your own players fumbling untouched or dropping balls while wide open? Not being an ass, didn't have a chance to watch the game.

Turnovers are usually caused by pressure from the opponent.

In the case of at least three of the turnovers, I would say yes. Maybe four. And my guess is ND will not get six turnovers in another game this year. This was not a situation in which ND simply played awesome "six turnover worthy" defense. UM (mostly Denard) made multiple really bad decisions. How many games in the last five years has ND benefited from six turnovers? It's a relatively unusual situation. And how many times does a team turn the ball over six times and win the game? We lost by a TD on the road. We turned the ball over six times. We beat ourselves.

...and by that logic ND was the better team last year...and the year before. BTW, who is crowing over beating UM? I was simply responding to the Mich homer making the same claim you are.
