Divers?

  • How many SCUBA divers are on the board? And where have you been? I have been certified for about 4-5 years now and try to go somewhere every year for diving. I have been to Grand Bahama and Bimini (on same trip), Exuma Bahamas (best trip so far), Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Cozumel, and some caves in Florida. I am going to Key West and other islands this coming summer, and want to make it to Indonesia or Malaysia the following summer.

  • I used to dive frequently but haven't in about 10 years. I've been to the Cozumel (I got certified here), Caymans, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Florida, Jamiaca, and Australia.

  • Not a diver but I did a pretty good bit of snorkeling this Summer in the Panhandle. We did the Destin Bridge and pass, found the hard bottom on the "Bumps" in the bay in PC which holds Snapper and Grouper in the Winter. Then all around Shell Island looking for Blue Crab. I'd love to get certified and head out. First place I would head would be the rigs off Louisiana. The spear fishing those guys do around there looks like a ton of fun

    Honestly, I thought Belize was way overrated. I liked Roatan better than Belize also. Planning on going back and spending more time there.

    Spiegel Grove off Key Largo is pretty cool.

    Its over 150ft though.

    If in the keys, dive the Vandenberg. It's awesome.

    I almost went to Belize last summer but a couple of my buddies wanted to go to cozumel instead (cheaper). Belize is on the top of my list for sooner rather than later dives. I will have to wait to do Galapagos, I just can't afford to do a 10-day live-aboard right now. Wish I could but I can't. By the way, I have been to St. Lucia but didn't dive. I loved it there and is by far the best island I have been to so far. Once my significant other and I finally decide to get married, this will be our honeymoon.

    I dove devils neck in cozumel which I hit 158ft. Thats the deepest I have been but I have been 152ft before then in the bahamas.

    I have also heard from other divers that Honduras was better than Belize. The said the diving was about the same but the atmosphere made the difference and they just generally had a better time in Honduras than Belize.

    I planned on this when I go next summer. What other dives should I hit while I am down there. I know I am staying in Key West, but I am not opposed to traveling a little to hit a must-do dive. I was hoping to be down there for the lobster mini season, but I didn't luck up for that one.

    This is interesting to me also. I mean Cozumel has great visibility and nice drift dives. but I thought the marine life was lacking some (even though this is where I saw my only octopus). But I haven't been to Belize to compare.

  • Cozumel is some of the best diving in the world and it's relatively cheap.

    My buddy dove the Great Barrier and said Cozumel is better. FWIW

  • I haven't experienced it, but my bro-in-law has dived all over the world and says that off the coast of Thailand is the best diving in the world.

    The USCG Duane and the Molasses reef were both good dives. Most of the better diving is in the upper keys.

    We saw the most soft coral, lobster, sea turtles, rays in Coz. The sea life was just much better there than anywhere else. Plus, we went on a "Swim with the whale sharks" tour that was awesome.

    Dove the U-352. Currents and viz are terrible in the atlantic. Dove some other WW2 ships and some confederate ships but there aren't much left of those.
