    Slavery is as inhumane as it gets. My problem with Lincoln is that he wiped his ass with the constitution. FDR didn't get us through the depression. He was the president when the depression was over. While this will drive the libs crazy, an argument can be made that his policies lengthened the depression.

    WW2 is what got us out of the depression. FDR just connected really well to people who were looking for hope. Lincoln didn't give a damn about slavery lol The only reason he issued the amincipation proclimation was to save the Union, and to keep foriegn nations from aiding the confederacy. It was just a tool he used to save the Union. LOL at people who think he cared about slaves. He seriously wanted to ship them back to Africa.

    Nah. That would mean there is a narrative that one school of thought owns over the discussion of the Depression and there isn't one. Every thing failed that was tried from Hoover and FDR and in other countries until WWII started.

    But he acted to end it, so kudos to him. Bush was a terrible president that couldn't get us out of war but his national deficit wasn't as high as Obama so he is deemed better. And he was republican. panic

    **Full Disclosure** I am a Libertarian. Obama is the worst President post Reconstruction. Followed by Carter and Bush. There are many reasons for this, so many that I am not going to go into depth on a football message board.

    As for Lincoln, he did what he believed necessary to save the Union. See the thing about Tyrants, is that they can be good. It’s when you get a bad one that all goes to shit. A philosopher King is not an entirely bad way to go if you could assume each to be a virtuous and just person. Problem with that is obviously, MAN IS CORRUPT and cannot be trusted. The three Presidents who shit on the constitution the most where he, FDR and Wilson. Obama is quickly inching his way into that top 3 (if he’s not already there).

  • In some ways yes. He was a "virtuous dictator" of sorts.

    He installed military law in places like Baltimore, suspended the writ of habeus corpus, and engaged in all sorts of nefarious and/or shadowy activity. But he did it for a reason - to save the country. I believe if he had survived his assassination he would have restored normal order and would have given up all of his emergency powers. Still, what he did was dictatorial in a lot of respects.
