    He was a president who, when faced with very desperate times, took very strong action in response. Yeah, a lot of the things he did were on the fringes of legality and highly questionable. But I wouldn't call him a "tyrant." Remember, for most of his presidency, he was constantly looking over his shoulder because of his upcoming reelection bid (he faced a very strong challenge within his own party before the general election too). It's hard to call a democratically elected (and then reelected) leader a tyrant... but yeah, he wasn't afraid to push the bounds.

    Honestly, Final Countdown pretty much took the words out of my mouth. I don't really have much to add to that. +1 to him.

    You also have to consider that the Presidency didn't come with an instruction manual. Remember the country hadn't even been around 100 years at that point so he was setting precedent as he was going along. I think he was doing what he thought he had to do to save the union.
    I agree I would have liked to see what his plan was for reconstruction, unfortunately he didn't share what those plans were.
    Do I think he was a tyrant? No, I think a tyrant is on the same level as a dictator. He would have cooled down on the power grab during reconstruction and would have only served two terms.
    FDR I think was more of a tyrant than Lincoln- serving more that two terms, trying to pack the SCOTUS with liberal judges in the ultimate power grab. Not to mention "Relocation" camps.

    Dude, we didn't do all the bombing, but we were the only intact major industrial base left after ww2. Nobody can argue that point.

    Well we can start with the price controls, Then go on to how our Government would limit the amount of crop the farmers could grow to artificially keep the price of food high, when the country was starving and cheap food without the price controls would have helped people.
