Do you honestly GAS about Whitney Houston?

  • I got the news the other day and it registered about ten seconds of my time. My response was simply, "huh", and then back on to important things. I really didn't expect to still be hearing about it at all, much less at this deafening level. Am I missing something here? Is this really a big deal or are people just pretending to care because that's what you do when people die?

  • The women in my office keep talking about how great she was, it sounds like nails on a blackboard to me. On top of that, one of them is trying to sing in that hushed annoying tone. The only reason I currently GAF is because I'm going to be annoyed by listening to it all day.

Exactly. It is annoying as hell. She was pretty good at her best but far from great. No need for all this IMO. Quite honestly, I hadn't even thought of or heard of her in 3-5 years before Friday or Saturday, whenever it was she died.

People just want everyone to know that Whitney moved them with her music and it's so sad how people can throw their life away. Some people just need drama in their lives and Whitney has provided a week to ten days of it.

I just feel sad for her daughter.

  • No. For exactly this reason. When I was in HS (circa 2003) an ex-gf of mine worked at Joe's Crab Shack that summer. Whitney came in (high) with her kids and a much younger "man friend" with no shoes on. She pulled up out front and left the car there (there aren't any valets at JCS). There was a wait, she demanded (yelling and cursing loudly) that she be seated immediately. She proceeded to run up a $300 tab (mostly drinks) and food for her kids. Then she attempted to walk out on the tab but the manager had her car keys because he valeted her car. They then got into a fight about her trying to walk on the tab and her general belligerence in a family restaurant. The manager gave the keys to one of the hostesses because Whitney was attempting to grab them from the manager (think the keepaway game with an adult). The police were called and somehow Whitney got her keys and they drove off before anything could be done.

Hell, there are probably at least as many stories like this about me...minus the kids, of course. I've straightened up since they came along, but in my "young and dumb and full of...money" days, I was a walking, driving trainwreck.

I live in NYC, I hear stories about Lou Reed refusing to tip. The vibe he gives off is it's a privilege for you to serve me.

Pretty good? Far from great? lol. There is a reason she is known in the industry as The Voice. At her best, there aren't but one or two who could claim to be her vocal equal.

And yes, sure I care from a human perspective. She was only 48 and a mother. I didn't lose any sleep but a premature and sad death like that caused a moment of thought about appreciating life as I know it.

No, I will give her "pretty good" and nothing more. There are thousands more just like her.

All celebrity deaths are over drawn. They should let the people just rip.

The death of Heath Ledger turned him into the best actor on the planet.

2pac didnt go platinum until after his death.

But, I have to disagree with you about her voice. She's the industry ceiling in terms of vocal talent. Why do you think no one has ever attempted to redo any of her ballads?

    That's absurd.

I don't give a sh!t about Whitney Houston dying, but her voice was better than anyone else I've ever heard. Perfect example last nights sh!tty attempt by Jennifer Hudson to try and match Whitney's version of it. Hudson came NOWHERE close, and Hudson is one of the best out there right now.

If they are so plentiful, then please fill us all in on your soon to be astounding and successful music management career.

But amuse me and give me the name of 10 other singers right now who are better than Whitney at her best.

WTF did she even sing? The only song I can even name is "I will always love you". I really don't care about the opinion of someone who would label that as "great" singing. It was good, but that's it.

Edit: If we're talking about "screechy and annoying", then that song is easily in the top ten of all time.
