Do you smoke cigarettes?

How is not allowing smoking within a quarter-mile of a hospital ridiculous? If anything, I would assume this is the ONE place smoking *should* be banned completely.

It's the whole campus. They can't smoke/dip/chew on campus, yet they take the old smoking area, put a lock on the door, and now use it for illicet (sp)drug studies. In other words they let people smoke weed on campus and actually pay them for their time (as well as other drugs) yet you can't smoke a freaking cigaette? It's not like the smoking area was in an area with a lot of foot traffic. It was behind the morgue, which is kind of fitting.

  • Nope, but I'm not a hater. Most of my friends smoke. Do what you want to do, I don't care. In fact I don't even have a problem with people smoking in bars, although it's banned here in MI now. I do have one friend though who's been trying really hard to quit and can't. I kinda feel bad for him, it seems like every time I see him he says he's trying to quit, but then lights up 5 minutes later lol.

  • I can't believe people are okay with banning smoking in bars or restaurants.

I know a bar owner in upstate South Carolina that had to close down because of our recent ban. I think that the owner of an establishment should choose whether or not to allow smoking. If a bar allows smoking and you don't like it, don't go there. It's as simple as that.

And I quit smoking 3 weeks ago.

Not enough upvotes for this post.

If I invest my money to acquire a business establishment, I should be free to REQUIRE my customers to smoke as condition of entry if that's what I want to do.

The market will tell me if that's a bad idea or not, but that should NOT be determioned by arbitrary government regulation

Edit: I smoke a few cigars a month, but haven't smoked cigarettes in 10 years

I don't smoke, but what few people don't understand is this is just the beginning. They have already tried to ban salt in NY city restaurants. Don't know if they succeeded, but they will go after salt, sugars, & alcohol eventually.

Exactly. I worked at a hospital for a year and the group smoking out under the smoking pavilion was basically a who's who of Darwin Award failures. Basically people on oxygen draggin cigarettes. Ignorance knows no bounds.

  • Smoked once in my life and didn't do anything for me but make me sick.

Smoking is banned in MN bars/restaurants/establishments and I like it that way. There are plenty of places to smoke (i.e. outside) when you're at an establishment. Your cancer sticks should not be allowed to affect the health of those choosing not to smoke around you.

What a pathetically myopic endorsement of over-reaching governmental paternalism.

Let's say me and my friends don't like loud music in bars...maybe we could get the government to ban you from booking live entertainment in your bar. My grandmother, and her friends from church aren't real big on adult entertainment...maybe they could lobby the government to ban nude dancing at the strip club you just bought; oh and turn down the music in there...I know no one can hear it outside, but when I go in, I find it annoying. And your restaurant that you bought, I don't like the way my clothes smell when I leave there, so your restaurant should be banned from using cooking oil in the preparation of any foods at all.

If I own an establishment, I should be free to choose to allow smoking in my establishment. If you don't like it you should be free to choose to keep the hell out. You want to enjoy the warmth of the blanket of enjoyment provided by my establishment and then you question the manner in which I provide it? GTFO.

In the end, the market should tell me whether I have made a wise business decision, not a bunch of namby pamby do-gooders from the government.

As much as I hate cigarette smoke, you are exactly right. I never expect to see cigs banned in bars in alabama..I really don't know how bars enforce this in the states where it is a law. A simple solution for a bar that wants to allow smoking is to make it a private club where everyone has to buy a membership.

trust me, I don't like cigarette smoke either [and I smoke cigars on the reg], and there are some clubs that I don't go too very often--and my wife won't go to at all---because they're too damn smokey; but that should be the end of it.

The notion of the government rendering the legal to be illegal in my establishment because of the preference of people that don't have to be there is anti-american.

As somebody who doesn't smoke cigs, I love not leaving a bar/ restaurant smelling like an ash tray..... But you hit the nail right on the head

I guess the Government should stop regulating Power Plants and any other toxic plants. Just let all the hazardous waste go in the the air and affect everyone. I'm sure you would like that, huh?

No they should shut those plants down, First, I find them to be annoying, nut as if that's not enough, some people who voluntarily and knowledgabley elect to work there might be sustaining harm from doing so, and we need to make sure they are precluded from earning income from a place which has such callous diregard for its workers

Yeh well while I respect your right to express an opinion, I cant tell you how much I disrespect opinions which support the notion that the government exists to decide what is best for its subjects,,,I mean citizens.

I don't wanna hijack this thread but if you ever come to understand the extent of desruction of personal liberties and the magnitude of tax revenues which have been dedicated/frittered away through dedication to an unsustainable and unwinnable war on drugs--all in the name of the Guvmint "protecting" you, I have no doubt you would believe otherwise

Edit: it's a goddamn obscenity IMHO, and if you ever had a loved one locked away and the key tossed, you'd know what I mean
