Does Te'o really deserve the Heisman?

  • He had 0 forced fumbles. only 1.5 sacks. and only 5.5 tackles for loss all season. If you go back and watch the highlights all of the interceptions were literally thrown right to him or off of tipped balls. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

    Wow thats a valid point.

I wouldve assumed he had 2-3 FF, 5-9 sacks, 15+ TFL based on all the hype. I haven't watched ND play at all this year.

  • I wish he was playing the MLB spot for us but I'm honestly surprised he's even going to NY let alone having a legit shot at the trophy.

  • Really don't get the hype around him. I mean if we're going of emotions the why didn't Eric Legrand win? I mean 46 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks and no defensive TDs? No way he should get it.

Johnny Football has a FF. But seriously bro, he is second in the nation in passes defended, that has to count for something, right?

  • if Suh didn't get it, no way Te'o should get it

85 total tackles, 20.5 TFL, and 12 sacks. Add in one of the most dominating performances by a defensive player ever against Texas in the Big 12 title game in 2009.

Agreed, SUH is the best defender I've ever seen play college football. Too bad he's also a worthless pos.

  • I feel awful about his grandmother/girlfriends passing away in the same week, but that doesn't warrant winning the Heisman trophy. I'm there are numerous FBS players dealing with equally awful situations this year. I know he plays for the #1 team in the country, but does he deserve the alleged most prestigious award in college football? Absolutely not.

  • The Heisman is pretty much a popularity contest as we have all seen... not sure why a lot of you struggle to see why Te'o would be included in the discussion.

Maybe other defenders have better stats, but no one comes close to the combo of stats and national attention on that side of the ball.

Sure we all know a lot of other LB's in his league, but at this point... people who barely follow football have heard of Manti Te'o.

  • Te’o's 7 interceptions are the highest number of interceptions by a linebacker of the last twelve years. To give you an idea of how remarkable an achievement that is, there isn’t one other linebacker in the top 20 in interceptions and the next closest linebacker has just 4 interceptions. Te’o is tied for the lead in takeaways nationally (interceptions and fumbles recovered) with 9 (the other two leaders are defensive backs). Additionally, there isn’t a linebacker on record who has 7 interceptions and 100 tackles in a year (at least that we can find.) While some may look at Te’o's lack of sacks and/or tackles for loss, it’s important to note that he was asked to play a completely different role this year. When asked to play that role last year he had 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. Those are outside linebacker numbers from the middle linebacker position. Ironically, pass coverage was supposed to be his one weakness coming into this year. Te’o played against many early Heisman candidates… who weren’t candidates after they played Notre Dame including Bell, Robinson, Taylor, Lee and Jones. If the criteria is “outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity“, it’s hard to argue any player has been more “outstanding while exhibiting the pursuit of excellence with integrity”, than Manti Te’o.

  • Since teo is so great at ints he should switch to safety because the stats most important for MLB he is mediocre at best

Robinson and Jones were out of the Heisman race before they played ND. Especially Robinson. He was out of it after the first game.

..and yet he is projected as the first or second LB selected in the draft. Read what I cut and pasted above. He has had those "MLB" numbers the last 2 years. This year he was asked to cover more TEs, etc and has obviously shown he is great at that as well. Being as ND is 1st in the nation in scoring defense, I would say he was doing what the coaches needed him to do in order for the Defense to best succeed.

Apparently his numbers were impressive enough to win the Lombardi, Nagurski, and Butkus awards.

  • No FF's raises an eyebrow, but the INT's thing is no big deal. How do most LB's get INT's? On balls thrown to them or tipped passes. If the QB is throwing it right to them, that means they're in the right spot. They also still have to catch these passes. PSU's MLB Glenn Carson had a pass thrown right to him in OT against Wisconsin and dropped it with his stone hands. These guys are defensive players for a reason.

Now, I don't know that he deserves to win the Heisman. But I don't think you can just dismiss his INT's as being thrown to him or being tipped passes.

  • No. He's a great player but not Heisman worthy. The problem is the voters are lazy as sh*t, don't pay attention, and jump on whatever bandwagon ESPN tells them to jump on.

Manziel put up better numbers than Tebow and Cam when they won. I remember when people were absolutely FLOORED by the numbers those two guys put up and both times couldn't see anyone topping them. Manziel did. He's your winner.

...or it could be with 3 players doing it so close together that it is not as big a feat as once thought. For years and year the 4000 passing benchmark was huge in the NFL. Now just a few years later many make it each year. No doubt his numbers are still impressive but just because a player broke a 2 year old record that by itself doesn't make a player Heisman worthy. Heck he is not even first in total offense this year. Fact is there are three players that are invited and a case can be made for each.
