  • With all the talk of Eddie Lacy possibly going in the first, besides a player with AP kind of talent, should a running back ever be drafted in the 1st round anymore?

    My team took Benie Wells in 1st round and dude is a bust. Had one good year, he has to be the softest running back of all time.

  • Yeah Beanie Wells hasn't stayed healthy enough to warrant a 1st round pick. But AP, Arian Foster, Frank Gore, Michael Turner, Marshawn Lynch, Ray Rice, Doug Martin, Chris Johnson, Trent Richardson, Matt Forte, Jamaal Charles, Alfred Morris, CJ Spliller are all huge parts of their offense.

    I think 1 and some years 2 rbs are 1st round material. Many 1st round picks end up being busts, not just rbs. It just depends on the team. Patriots? No GB? No. Last year Cleveland? Yes

  • No, unless they're on a AP/Trent status (like the op said).

    The gm has switched to a passing attack, and every down backs are slowly becoming rare.

    I'd draft them, starting in the 2nd round, and they'd have to perform well, and stay healthy, for the duration of their rookie contract to get that $$.

  • I'd say it depends on your type of offense. The 49ers for example like to run the ball, the saints not so much and were dumb drafting mark. That said if a talented back is something the o is missing. I could see the pick being used for the right guy

  • It's gotta be an elite talent... there isn't a 1st round RB in the draft this year, but one will likely be taken there.

    You can find productive running backs late in the draft or sometimes even as a UDFA.

    The shelf life is way too short, and most of the time you don't want to end up giving them that second contract after their rookie deal is up.

    I have no idea when all those guys were drafted, just saying that they all make 1st round impact in their offenses. The Saints drafting Mark Ingram in the 1st round was mind boggling. I think Ingram was a late 1st/early 2nd round talent but he will never have a chance to show why he was drafted so early because he is in the Saints offense.

  • Depends on the team and where they are drafting. Taking a RB with the 28th pick as opposed to the 3rd pick is vastly different although both are in the first round. If a team feels like RB is a void and there is player they believe is a fit for their style of play, why wouldn't you take him? Top 10 should be heavily scrutinized but once the "sure thing" prospects are off the board by the middle of the first round, you have to assess need versus players available.

    It is funny how people react to the way the draft is run these days...apparently, RB, Safety, and OG/C should never be top 10. Some say there isn't a QB or a CB in this draft that deserves top 10 pick. That pretty much leaves OT, DL, and LB as the only positions that should go top 10 in this years draft according to those people. Fact is, the player taken should be a fit for the team that shores up a weakness on their roster.

    I don't think theirs a first round RB in this draft, but yes guys like AP, MJD, Foster ect are worth it

  • anyone that takes Lacy in the first is retarded. you basically need to be Adrian peterson level to be worthy of a first at this point. Yeldon might be in a couple years but i dont see it with lacey.

    i was surprised when the Bucs took martin last year and was really pissed but he turned out ok. its just hard to use a 1st on a runningback unless your team really emphasizes the run

  • To me what the NFL plays is a modified version of football... I think the rules and style of play has marginalized almost every position but a few. To me CFB is real football from a need at each position and the traditional positions still matter.

    To me - QB, rush end / OLB are far and away the most important positions. Then a play maker at WR and a ball hawk at safety.

    You still need solid guys at other spots but has Joe Thomas made a difference for the Browns? Nope. Bryant McKinnie anchored a line for the Ravens.....

    So no never take a RB. It is like that Guard from Bama.... His impact is less of a difference from a good guard to elite as a good pass rusher to elite.

    I think he was just listing players that would be worth a first round pick due to their on-field performance. Kind of a hindsight thing which, of course, makes it much easier to determine what NFL backs are "1st round" backs.

    I'd be very hesitant to use a 1st round pick on a RB due to changes in the game and their shelf life.

    It's early but as of today, in the eyes of scouts......Jeremy isn't a 1st rounder. Again, it's very early as this list is ever evolving until each guy's actual draft day.

    I agree with Gurley being listed #1 as of now. As I stated in another thread, Bama's RBs averaged 4.2 yards per carry before contact this season. Very difficult to evaluate Lacy and Yeldon given the dominance of Bama's OLine. Even as a Bama fan...I don't think either is the best RB in their class. Again, 4.2 yards "before contact" for RBs is unreal.

    Michael Turner currently doesn't have a team and only had 800 yards rushing last year

    Of course Hill isn't now.. He was a Freshman that didn't start playing until Midseason.. He only has 6 or 7 games under his belt.. He has all of this season and next to improve his stock which I'm sure he will.

    if you watched him run roughshod over & through defenders during his last three college games you would say yes.
    and while somewhat overhyped,the last two units were some what decent.

    Ingram ran over everyone too and won the Heisman.. That doesn't mean he'll be worth a 1st round pick.. He sure hasn't played like it in the NFL.

    Not saying Lacy won't be a beast in the NFL but give most RB's ZERO contact for 4 yards and they'll straight up run over defenders too.
