Drafting Running Backs

  • justinboze said...

I have no idea when all those guys were drafted, just saying that they all make 1st round impact in their offenses. The Saints drafting Mark Ingram in the 1st round was mind boggling. I think Ingram was a late 1st/early 2nd round talent but he will never have a chance to show why he was drafted so early because he is in the Saints offense.

I believe only five of the rbs you mentioned were drafted in the first. Thats not really helping your argument. Yes rbs can be important but that doesnt necessarily warrant a first round pick.

  • Saints run way more than you think.. Have a great OL too.. The Saints have been top 5 in rushing a few times in the past 5-6 years. Too many excuses for Ingram by blaming it on the Saints O.. RB's don't have to run against 8 man fronts playing in the Saints offense.

Danielle Hunter, Jamario Rasco, Anthony FREAK Johnson.. DL wrecking crew of 2013.

Saints also split carries between 4 RBs.

Ingram has always gotten better the more he gets the ball. You can still see his potential but he's in a crowded backfield.

I think he'd be better off in 2 back system than a 4 back system.

Hell send him to Dallas. I'll take him and Murray as a 1-2 punch

Which is why we're drafting OL and DL with our first 3 picks or Jerry is gonna get a not so friendly visit from Ichabod

Side note: Whats this rumor I've heard from multiple sites on Les?

    Sure

Waste a roster spot on 4 running backs when you could improve your defense

    Makes a ton of sense

I think he was just listing players that would be worth a first round pick due to their on-field performance. Kind of a hindsight thing which, of course, makes it much easier to determine what NFL backs are "1st round" backs.

I'd be very hesitant to use a 1st round pick on a RB due to changes in the game and their shelf life.

well kind of defeats the purpose of saying RBs are worth 1st round picks if you list a bunch of successful ones who weren't 1st rounders.

Btw Foster went undrafted.... No way in hell would I ever draft a running back in the first with all these pass happy offenses.

and charles was a 3rd rounder.

And Ray Rice was a 2nd rd pick and Foster was an udrafted FA.

  • i thought Ingram was a 2nd round guy at best.

  • I'm sorry. Montee Ball is the surest RB the NFL has seen since Adrian Peterson. He does not have elite measurables, but the man does not fumble, has Hall of Fame type cutting ability and just is a horse. That kid is going to be in the league a long time, and he is going to be stolen because he does not have the top of the line measureables. I sure as hell hope the Packers draft him.

He's not fast but he's plenty quick. He is about the same speed as Emmit Smith or Alfred Morris. And his lateral quickness is already at a hall of fame level. Same people dismissing Ball this year were dismissing Russell Wilson for the same reasons.

  • The goal now with the new rookie deal will be to draft a RB and wear him out before you have to pay him his second contract. Then find the next back in the draft 4 years later. People paying RBs big time money are dumb. AP Is good but 100 million? Really? If there was ever going to be an exception to the rule it'd be him but I just don't see the value in that.

Draft a young guy. Use his talent on the cheap for 4 years and then it's on to the next one.

  • In todays NFL... You need your RB to have some speed and to be a very good pass catcher.. You can't have an average speed RB that doesn't catch the ball out of the backfield.

That's why guys like CJ Spiller are so good and important.. Fast and can turn a screen pass into a long TD.

  • Unless you have an AP type RB, I would not draft a RB in first round. These days, you need 3 to 4 reliable backs and especially ones who can pass block/read blitzes. Durable RBs are a thing of the past, it seems. Draft a durable round 2 guy and add him to your stable. Sinking bank on a RB is a tough sell these days.

  • Careers are too short and the RB by comittee has taken the league over. Unless they have AP talent than no

I'd say never do it in the 1st round... even if they have "AP ability". You can't always gauge what level of talent means a "sure thing". Reggie Bush was supposed to be more of a sure thing than Peterson.

The fact is that the offense can make or break an RB... not the other way around. Good RBs in the league can seem entirely mediocre on a team not ready for a solid running game. Even if a guy perceived to be "AP level" is out there, I'd probably pass him up in favor of a top-flight DE/OLB or a 1st round caliber QB.
