ESPN buys USC radio rights

Won't have a TV deal due to the SEC.

Won't do the radio deal due to the CTSN which covers Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida panhandle, South Carolina, and Georgia. Not to mention we add new affiliates every year.

There are more CTSN affiliates in the south than there are ESPN radio affiliates.

That's cool and all but I don't see why that doesnt meant I can't be jealous we don't have a larger national following despite our rabid regional one.

USC only has a larger one due to it's location. An L.A. private school that's a traditional powerhouse in football will have a bigger national following than any other school in the country.

Be happy they have Lane Kiffin while we have the best coach in the game.

You are being slightly BOLish about this. It's like five-star quarterback part deux.

No, I'm being logical about it. I'm in broadcasting and know the business side of this.

I still don't see why I can't want a national and regional footprint and following. shrug

I distinctly said that I read only the stuff that pertains to USC from ESPN, nothing else. I loved WeAreSC in spite of the fact it was ESPN, now they've ruined it in it's new format.

I'll read anthing and everything by Garry, regardless of who he's affiliated with.

    Just needling you kid.

I'm with you on the TV deal. I want an Alabama network like Texas has.

Radio, doesn't make as much as sense.

Our footprint gets bigger each year by the way.

I love the rabidness of our fan base, but a greater national presence is beneficial to the state, the school and the football team.

It's almost a mutual symbiosis in that more out-of-state students bring in more money, either stay and contribute or leave and more than likely grow the national fanbase. In turn, that more than likely draws more out-of-state students/legacies/players in addition to---and you can help here with whether this is true or not---possibly improving a bargaining chip for the team and the conference when it comes to negotiating media contracts.

  • It's a fact that the SEC branding actually hurts Bama in this case. You have so many great teams and such a strong conference presence nationally that no one team sticks out.

Also this is radio we are talking about here. The SEC buries the Pac in TV coverage.

You have a rabid fanbase, and very vocal. But our program is very well funded and supported as well.

I've been trying to tell my friends down there forever...that we (Trojans) may not all like to brave the L.A. traffic on game day, but we have a very large TV viewing audience, as well as radio listeners - many sit in the stands with their earphones following the game on radio. Trojans are the best bowl series audience out there. If only the rest of the PAC had as large of a TV following, it would be ranked much higher as a conference.

Agree--USC should be in the SEC!

Nah, we'd only be the 9th best team in the SEC behind Vanderbilt and ahead of Mississippi State. At least we can compete for third place in the 5th best BCS conference...

Not just due to our location - UCLA is in the same location.

One of the most powerful USC traditions is..."anyone, anytime, anywhere." Remember when we played your team in Alabama? First fuly integreted team to play in the deep south? We did the same in Austin, Texas in 1956. USC played anyone that would schedule them, regardless of travel or distance.

AND, tapping the shoulder of the greatest CFB program of it's time, Notre Dame over 80+ years ago to establish an ongoing rivalry across the country, the only rivalry of it's kind, even today. USC was not just happy dominating the west coast. At that point, USC was in the national spotlight.

Our new WR coach, Tee Martin made a reference to that in an interview recently - as an SEC guy who didn't know much about programs outside of the south, save for USC.

We don't play "Big Boy" football out here...the NFL just hasn't figured that out yet, nor has Canton.

    Don't tell.
