Ellis Johnson to FSU?

  • It is still soft whispers but some think its nearly done. My main point here is to ask if anyone else is hearing their program is hard after him?

He is not without flaws but the guy can coach, coach, coach.

    fsufsu

  • He is a great DC. FSU would be smart to hire him.

Some of our posters are saying they dont want an "old" coach. lol, Im trying to plead with them to no avail.

    fsufsu

  • Bump.

    fsufsu

  • I like Johnson. Great DC.

  • I think Johnson would be a great fit, not perfect(age/recruiting). But that is were you make up for that lack of, with the rest of the staff. I would love to see his scheme with the players that we have.

    scotchtkh

  • I agree Scotch, he would have to be "complimented" but as a tactician he is better than Stoops. JMO

Still just trying to gauge if any other teams, namely SEC, have him in the cross hairs.

    fsufsu

  • He would coach the LB group. Which means, you bring in DB and DE guys that are motivated and young like Craig/Coley hybrids.

He is my number 1 guy at DC. He is a little old, so not many people will give him a chance at being a head coach, so there is a possibility that he could be here for a good moment, which I like. Bring in a coach that he could have a chance to groom and take over after that.

  • I always got the impression his scheme was about not giving up the big play. We seemed to play a lot of soft coverages outside the red zone, which occassionally resulted in giving up yards, but then we would hold people to FGs instead of TDs. He was always concerned about momentum and if he had an O on the ropes, he would not want to give up a big play to give them hope.

SOS originally hired Van Gorder for our DC, but he left after a month to go to the Falcons. That is when SOS hired Johnson. I don't think you will ever find a single USC fan that doesn't think that was a blessing. Plus, even though he loves clemson, he knows how to beat them.

Johnson would be a fantastic hire, imo.

That's exactly how he was at Alabama.

  • Ellis would be a great hire. His bend but don't break scheme is scary as hell to watch, but it works for sure.

Plus, he consistently shuts down Clemson :)

  • Not interested in bend but don't break D. You do that when you don't have the athletes. Want an aggressive D-coordinator

  • "Not so fast my friend..." on Ellis Johnson. A Plainsman has surfaced...

Clowney, Ingram, Gilmore, Taylor, Swearinger, etc....plenty of athletes. He was very aggressive with his D-line, and expected to get enough pass rush to compensate for his secondary "bending". I don't think anyone thought Ellis's D was not aggressive.

  • The SEC will let you have him if we dont want him.

  • I liked Ellis, but he also frustrated the shit out of me. He never blitzed, and had a bend don't break approach. I like a more aggressive defense than he brought, but he's a good DC. Also a hell of a recruiter.

His defense was not aggressive...not even close. He rarely blitzed..ever. I'm glad for what he did for S Car, but I prefer Ward over Ellis by a long shot.

Base on what? We get a better Qb almost for sure. Rest of O returns except LP but we can game plan his spot out.

    You really sweating our D?

    fsufsu

  • Chizik to fsu as DC has some smoke.

No I just think Jimbo will fail again, he clearly doesn't know how to use his weapons on offense

Also I want you do something for me, watch how RG3 runs the read option

Then watch how FSU runs it

The first thing that should jump out to you is how terrible FSU's RB's and EJ sell the fakes, and that is the whole point of the read option

I can't help but think EJ could have been great at it, but his fakes never gave him easy plays like it does RG3

Now is EJ as good as RG3 ? of course not, but he is very good at the option and in the ACC should have tore them up with this kind of attack, it would have helped his short passing game and his ability to run the ball

But clearly Jimbo doesn't even care, or notice that his RB's don't even try to sell the fake

Jimbo sucks, FSU will have to break in a new defense and the schedule will be tougher.... FSU loses at least 3 games next year so who fuggin cares, Im just done with FSU

    I hate those cocksucking pussies

I'd be surprised if he wants to coach D on a team that runs a hurry up spread.

I realize he hardly blitzed, which is why I said he was aggressive with his "D-Line". Getting a pash rush with his front 4, and let his secondary play bend but don't break.

I would rather have Ward too, but Johnson is still a great DC, IMO.

some of our posters also ate paint chips as children. we need a guy who can recruit and run a good defense. johnson fulfils both criteria. he also is much less likely to leave after the disaster last year and his age will keep schools from wanting to commit to him being a HC
