Engineering?

  • I'm thinking about changing majors and and doing engineering. What type should I do? Is it worth it? Engineers: do you like your career? What should I expect? etc. TIA.

  • I'm probably the wrong person to ask 'cause I actually left Mechanical Engineering to do Graphic Design instead. I love math and physics, just didn't vibe well with my teachers. If you like math, physics, theory, etc. you'll enjoy engineering. It pays well, too, which is good, in basically every discipline.

    What major are you now?

  • If you enjoy math and chemistry, give chemical engineering a try. I'd also get an MBA to go along with whatever engineering degree you get. It makes you extremely valuable as you'd be able to run divisions of other engineers.

Be warned, if you're coming to Bama, we don't have the Industrial Engineering major anymore.

I'm an international business major right now at a small college. I started out at Alabama but had to transfer back home after my first year. I am in my fourth semester and have been very undecided about what I want to do. I always liked math and science in high school and did well in all the AP classes I took, but I CLEPed them all and have been taking mostly gen rec and some introductory business courses so far.

  • Since you have a business background, look into Management Engineering. It's basically applying engineering principals to business management. It's pretty cool from what I've read.

That sounds like where its at.

Nobody really wants to be an engineer--unless you're a structural engineer or someone working in the insurance field where you aren't stuck in a cubicle all day.

I'm a Sr. Product Engineer (Mechanical Engineer) and have been in the Automotive Industry for over 20 years. Even with all the hard times, I've never been without a job. To be a good Mechanical Engineer you need to be Detail Orientated and like to crunch data. There's a lot more to it than just this, but it is a start.

If you really want to know more, you can contact me.

  • I did Ocean Engineering and work in the Oil and Gas Industry. I basically work as a mechanical engineer. Oil and Gas will probably pay more than a lot of other engineering jobs but I think it typically has a little higher stress (I think cause I haven't worked in other fields). Emergencies will pop up and you have to come up with solutions that will work the first time, no prototyping. For instance during the BP oil spill I was working 90+ hrs per week. The most frustrating thing is when you work overtime you don't get paid cause you'll be on salary. Now I get paid by the hour to avoid those circumstances. I know Petroleum Engineers make the most money out of all the different types (average around $115k). I enjoy what I do. Engineering from my experience is more practical rather than analytical but that will depend on what you are doing. As a whole it is a great job and always in demand. Companies are almost always looking for more engineers.

Well, this is true is you stay an engineer. But a LOT of upper managers for engineering companies worked their way up from engineer. Usually they excel as well because they know the products inside and out.

I've been in the Technical/Engineering Staffing business for three years...So I can offer some advice. Chemical and Mechanical Engineers are always a high demand from our clients. Followed by Electrical, I&C, and Structural. Unless you really have a passion for Civil or Construction Engineering I wouldn't go that route. I know several Civil grads who can't find work. The market could change by the time you get out of school though...

Good luck with whatever you decide, but if you can handle all the math and science courses Engineering is a great career choice.

  • Eh Engineering is overrated. Switching professions is bad news. I'd recommend leveling another character up and start that one as an engineer. I'm nearly maxed level in engineering, myself (level 500 to be exact). You won't make much gold off of anything it can produce. Though companion pets sell fairly well and I have made a killing with the "Lifelike Mechanical Toad" thus far. You'll be hard pressed to find the pattern though and it will cost you a good deal of gold when you do find it on the auction house. Further, you'll need to farm materials for several days or have a bit of gold capital to "powerlevel" engineering as it is one of the more expensive professions to level up. I have two engineers actually. One went with the Gnomish Engineering specialty and the other went with the Goblin Engineering specialty. I think at the end of the day, a jewelcrafter or herbalist will run circles around you in profitability though.

  • Just know what you're getting yourself into if you're switching into engineering. You'll probably have to take a little tougher schedules to catch up. I've been in ChemE (currently a junior) since I started college and I'm currently trying to finish stuff up so I can do something tonight. My schedule is pretty difficult this semester (Biochem, Mass Transfer, Unit Ops Lab, Safety (harder than it sounds), Next Energy (like future energy sources), and a psych class). I'm trying to only have one class my last semester, so I can train for an ironman but I'd imagine you'd have a similar schedule to this if you're behind in prereqs and stuff. Not trying to discourage you, but just want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

I have a computer engineering degree and have been working as a software and controls engineer for 11 years. I really can't imagine doing anything else. It can be stressful at times, but I really enjoy designing systems and problem solving.

  • I would say Mechanical or Civil. Those two are easily transitioned to other engineering fields. If you are looking to make $$$$, then you should look into Petrol or Ceramic. If you don't want to take math past calculus, I would suggest Construction Management. I'm making 85K with my CSM degree 1 year after I graduated.
