Ever had a player absolutely transform in one offseason?

  • I just can't buy it.

    Taylor Martinez.

    Stop laughing for a second.

Went and spent time with QB Guru Steve Calhoun this offseason. Apparently the footwork is night and day different.

The key lesson for now: footwork. Get off the back right foot, transfer the weight to the left front foot and point that left foot toward the target. Then, Calhoun said, Martinez can easily clear his front left shoulder and use his "super-strong throwing arm" to its full potential.
"He has a high ceiling as far as improving as a passer," Calhoun said. "When he uses his base and his core, he'll improve his velocity even more."

Many of you have seen him throw. Armpunt extraordinaire. Supposed gotten much better. Not amazing, but significantly better.

    BACK TO THE POINT

Anyone got a player in mind who went 0 to 60 in a single offseason?

His mechanics are awful. Because of his athleticism, he was converted from a defensive back to quarterback in high school. Freshman year at Nebraska, he worked out the Scout Team as a wide receiver. It was his running that Bo Pelini fell in love with, passing was second fiddle.

In his redshirt freshman year, OC/QB Coach Watson was working out the kinks in an awful offense. Martinez simply didn't get much attention, eventually injured his ankle and was set on the shelf the rest of the time.

Last year, new OC/QB Coach Beck was installing his offense. He admitted as much -- He didn't spend as much time on Martinez as he should have.

Every problem Martinez has roots back to atrocious mechanics and base. From the snap, he led with the wrong foot. Pushed off on the wrong foot. Put his weight on the wrong foot. Threw from his waist. Leaned back in throwing.

For Martinez, an athlete, to succeed as a quarterback? Someone needs to teach him how to be one. From the beginning.

I just don't think he can go from athlete to quarterback in one offseason.

Oh - I should add: Our QB development is quite possibly the most remarkable embarrassment of the program. When we recruit un-polished passers, I don't think we can afford to have an OC/QB Coach. I'd like to have the OC coach another position (RB), and have a legitimate QB Coach.

  • Watching the Cap One Bowl, it was amazing to see how awful his throwing motion was. Looked like he was shot-putting the football.

Us Ohio State fans can sympathize a little. We had a media coordinator as our quarterbacks coach last year. Word on the street is that Braxton Miller has learned where his feet should be, now that he has a real quarterback coach, and is much improved. I could see a big turn around for Martinez if this is the first time to really get instruction.

  • From the outside looking in, maybe Jonathan Crompton. In the games I saw he looked awful his junior year and became an NFL draft pick after his senior year iirc.

Never thought he'd be a bad QB let alone a draft pick.

  • When it comes to mechanics, I don't think so. At this point, throwing becomes something of a habit. When practices and games come around, it always seems that QB's revert to their old way of throwing the ball. Especially if they aren't protected well by the OL.

Cody Grimm on VT for defense... He was forced into playing time, and I thought he'd be terrible, boy was I wrong. Dude was a monster.

One of tmarts biggest problem, is pocket presence. He has no feel of the pocket, and fixing his footwork wont fix that. Also he has very little scrambling ability. Go look at the wisky game, and see the difference in scrambling between rustle and tmart.

Agreed. If his primary option isn't open right away he looks to run. I have said many times that he has no ability to change direction in the open field. His juke always cuts right into a blocker for a punishing hit. Its pathetic. Hopefully Bo gives BC a shot at significant playing time if TM stinks it up

I always thought Campbell had the talent. Fairley is a decent pick, although he was pretty good in 2009.

Campbell got me thinking of another Auburn QB that went from having a horrible career to a pretty decent little run to the end of 1999, in Ben Leard.
