Hey Steve! Who do you think Michigan offers at QB first for the 2014 class?

As you know, Michigan isn't in any rush to offer a 2014 QB. They'll evaluate game film from these kids' junior seasons and make a decision. I can't speculate at this point. They've shown interest in a lot of guys and have a lot of guys on the radar.

Right now Booker is the top rated player in both Ohio and the Midwest, who do you expect to challenge him for those spots when the dust settles?

Malik McDowell immediately comes to mind. McDowell has the frame and athletic ability to be a special DE/DT combo.

Do you see ND getting a top-5 class in 2013? Who do they have the best shot with in 2014 at the moment?

We currently have Notre Dame at No. 5 in the country and I think CB LJ Moore, WR Torii Hunter and LB Austin Hooper are three guys the Irish are in good shape with. They have a chance to maintain a Top-5 position, and at this point I believe they'll stay in the Top 10.

In 2014 ND has the two commitments already and at this point Oak Lawn (IL) Richards 2014 QB/ATH Tommy Mister is a guy that I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up in the Irish class.

Are Malik McDowell, Parrker Westphal, and Damon Webb going to take their time and commit closer to their senior season, or sooner? Would they be considered Michigan leans at this point?

I think Michigan leads for all three and yes they're going to take their time. I don't expect anything to happen with any of these guys during their junior year regarding a commitment.

I'd be surprised if Webb doesn't end up at Michigan. He has Ohio State, LSU and Michigan State in his top four, but the Wolverines have set the bar.

McDowell also likes Michigan State and Notre Dame.

Westphal also likes Ohio State and he'll visit Illinois in the fall among other places.

Steve, is Malik McDowell a U-M lean or has MSU made up some ground?

I think Michigan is the early leader but I also think it's close and he's giving everyone a good look. The Michigan State coaching staff has really impressed both Malik and his coach with the way they've recruited and treated them. They both also enjoyed their visit to East Lansing for a spring practice. I do think the Spartans are in the mix and I think Notre Dame is in the mix.

Do you think Nebraska has established a recruiting presence in Big Ten country?

Absolutely. They have Ohio products Kevin Gladney. Courtney Love and Marcus McWilson in the fold. Wisconsin DL AJ Natter is on board. The interest in Nebraska from Midwest kids will only grow as they continue to play in the Big Ten.

  • Steve,
We've heard Gerald Holmes looked pretty good over the weekend with 168 yards on 14 carries. Know anyone at the game who shared anything about the running style?
    Thanks

Steve, where do you think Damon Webb ends up?

I have a hard time seeing him anywhere but Michigan. They've been his favorite since he was a freshman and he was working hard for that dream offer and first offer.

  • Where will McDowell play in college? He's already massive (6'7 290?).. That's either a really heavy DE or a really tall DT. Where do you think he fits best?

Steve, in your opinion who is the best Midwest prospect this year?

    Jaylon Smith.

I've seen him run 4.4 handheld a number of times.

He plays fast on the football field. He can cover. Played nickel back the whole state championship game last year. He's long, super athletic, and he's a leader. I could go on and on, but he's the real deal.

    Where does Treadwell end up?

We talked about this in the pressbox at the Kickoff Classic at Wayne State

I still think Michigan is the team to beat, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Ole Miss. We'll see what he thinks about Oklahoma and Oklahoma State following visits to those schools. I also wouldn't be surprised to see USC jump into the mix before it's all said and done.

After seeing him at the Illinois NFTC and watching clips of him in the past, he's a big physical runner that doesn't go down on first contact. He can also make people miss. Ty Isaac was the only back bigger than him at the Illinois NFTC.

He's going to be a matchup nightmare in my opinion. I think he'll be listed as a DT in college but you'll see him play across the line of scrimmage. He's athletic and versatile.

The thing that stands out the most about Justin Brent is how he attacks the football. He goes and gets it. Has really strong ball skills. Also looks really good on the hoof. We'll work to get faster over the next two years.

Notre Dame hasn't offered Booth at this point. His top group for now is California, Iowa, Michigan State, Missouri and Ohio State. All but the Buckeyes have extended a scholarship.

As a reporter, I don't like to get into the overrated thing.

Underrated guys that come to mind.

Shane Jones, LB, Michigan State commit
    Alex Gall, OL, Miami commit
    Keith Watkins, RB, Northwestern commit
Darrien Howard, LB/DL, West Virginia commit
    Jarrod Clements, DL, Illinois commit
    Sean Welsh, OL, Iowa commit
    Sam Coverdale, OL, Northwestern commit
Darron Lee, S, Ohio State commit
    Dylan Wiesman, OT, Cincinnati commit
