FSU and Clemson to Big 12?

  • "Clemson donors were briefed on the situation last weekend. Looks more and more likely. FSU will need help with the buyout."

Bushido, others, why does GT make sense?

Atlanta, respectable football, fanbase, and basketball. Not sure about baseball as WVU sucks so I don't follow.

One thing I just came across(not from a message board, but from someone in the know).

Big 12/FSU/Clemson all want this done in time to start play in 2013/14 season.

Big 12 payed $9 million of WVU's $20 Million. WVU doesn't have to pay that $9 Million back.

  • From WVU side

I am not a gullible person. I don’t jump to conclusions, and I most certainly don’t like being accused of not having standards by “credible” journalists who react based on their opinion rather than any investigative effort.

So, not being a masochist, I was very hesitant to write about Big 12 expansion rumors again until I saw Tweets earlier today by a certain ACC apologists that made my blood boil.

But before I “spill my beans” I want to give you the same warning I was given by my friend at WVU.

Realignment talks take place in the dark. They are sensitive and can fall apart at anytime and all the parties involved will deny their involvement.

“Write about it at your own risk” he said.

    Risk indeed.

Remember that as you read what’s below. It’s true right now, May 4th, 2012 as I write it, but it may not be true tomorrow.

Clemson and FSU have an agreement in principal to withdraw from the ACC and compete in the Big 12 starting in 2013.

The announcement will come shortly after the new BCS 4+1 playoff system is ratified.

The deal to leave the basketball rich ACC is dependent upon the BCS playoff system. If the BCS playoff system changes, and somehow the ACC has an easier path to the playoff, then both Clemson and FSU can rethink their decision.

However don’t bet on that happening.

The gap in conference revenues between the Big 12 and the ACC, coupled with the new BCS plan, and the monetary problems of the FSU program make this move a financial necessity.

If you have trouble understanding why Clemson and FSU would consider bolting the ACC remember tt’s all about money in modern college football.

Money to compete with their in-state and neighboring SEC rivals. Money to stay competitive in facilities and coaches salaries, and the money that comes from a big 12 championship game backed by Jerry Jones.

There’s also this little thing about wanting to win a national championship.

If you would try and GPS the route the road to the national championship of college football you would see it runs through the SEC, Big 12, and the Pac 12 but doesn’t seem to have any onramps from tobacco road.

And that’s really not even open to debate as even wise sages and renowned ACC apologists admit the Big 12 is by far the better football league.

Add all that up and draw your own conclusions.

The question is will the Big 12 stop at 12 or go on? Bet on 14 being the final number with the leading candidates being Louisville, Cincinnati, BYU, Maryland and even lowly Pittsburgh.

The question is how would each of those teams add value to the TV contract and RPI of the league?

But that is for another post, right now I’m off to see the Avengers!

  • With the expanded tv money coming our way FSU boosters could do some creative financing to pay our part of the buyout while still getting our Indoor Practice Facility rolling. We'd be like those kids on Draft night, we haven't gotten our money yet but we've got a Rolls and a 50K dollar watch on.

  • shit, this would have been great for us... in a historical sense... from a fan's perspective

  • List of Potential Expansion Candidates:

Louisville: Wants in BAD. Great BB, so-so Football. Do they add enough to the table?
Florida St: This is THE prize. Traditional football power, in a populous state
Clemson: wants in but only with FSU. No SEC bid coming HATES ACC BB first
Miami: Probation is looming, small private school, but still National Name. Rumor is FSU is insisting Miami join with FSU.
Maryland: Bleeding money. Rival of WVU. No one has mentioned them as legit candidate
Rutgers: AAU school and University of New Jersey. Bad: No one cares
Tulane: AAU school and close to Oklahoma and Texas in SEC territory and once in SEC. May end up being the Big12’s Northwestern or Vanderbilt. Would be best academic school in Big12

These are off the list and are NOT candidates:

BYU: Put them here as this appears dead. The no play on Sunday issue was kills TV value
Georgia Tech: Sticking with “Tobacco Road” (UNC/Duke/NCstate) for some reason. Waiting for B1G?
North Carolina/North Carolina St/Duke/Wake Forest: UNC is the ACC’s UT. UNC and NCstate have the same board of regents. Duke and Wake Forest have have no choice
Virginia: Won’t touch SEC for academic reasons…and won’t touch Big 12 either
Virginia Tech: WVU would like them. But they sold soul to UVA and the ACC to get them in. Appears they can’t abandon them now.
Pitt: Been called a commuter school to much. WVU already brings the Pittsburgh TV market.

  • Damn. I didnt know it was this serious of a rumor until I just googled it.

Football will still be solid, obviously. Baseball will be maybe even stronger, getting away from that conf. Basketball might become a powerhouse over there, if only Kansas is in the way.

When do you guys think it moves from rumor, to possibility, to probable? Or is it nearing probable now?

    Money. Money money money money.

Nobody turns down double the money. Especially when we are talking $15 million to $30 million+ when you add in tier 3 money.

I agree- the last 2 years there has a been a ton of speculation but this just makes too much sense. If I was FSU and Clemson I would take off. I watch all football but the new Big 12 would be a fun conference to watch. If you go to 14 with BYU and Louisville then those are nice additions also with the anchors at the top.

BYU won't be coming. Conference is going east, not west.

  • Screw BYU. Louisville and GT. GT would also open up the opportunity to have Atlanta as a rotational site for the conference Chmp game. The SEC hiked their leg and pee'd on that city a ways back but GT would enable the Big12 to get in the door.

Rotate between Jerry World, Superdome, Atlanta every 3 years.

    fsufsu

  • Clemson, FSU, GT, Louisville make too much sense.

The Big12 will help FSU disseminate the news that FSU tried to get Miami in but that the Big12 wants to see how the next two years unfold. In two years Miami and another likely get added. Unless not getting in triggers Golden to dip out and the program truly, like for real, collapses.

Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Dallas every 3 years. Not a play on ND or anythingwhistling

  • Screw Indy. I wish Nashville had a dome, its geographically the perfect 3rd option but December in Nashville is a fickle mistress. It could either be immaculate and every planner's dream or 35 degrees and sleeting.

  • I'm picturing FSU's 2013 calendar year:

IPF goes up like a shot, finished, stunning

FSU coming off a 12-2 2012 year goes 13-1 or so. Officially "back"

Andrew Wiggins reclassifies to 2013 and signs with FSU, the Noles take Big 14 Championship in BBall their first year. NBA changes to go with Stern's desired 2 and done rule so Wiggins comes back and is basically an All NBA player trapped in college, destroys everyone and we take a 2nd B14 championship.

Would rather bring along Miami than Louisville. Better program (regardless of their current state), better market and logistically it'd make for less travel times for FSU and Clemson. I'm not against adding Louisville by any but I'd make them a last resort, like for in stance if Notre Dame wanted in the conference needed a 16th member.

Having said that, all of this seems like nothing more than just internet rumors. Would love for it to happen but I'll believe it when I see it.

  • Your thoughts make sense but it shows a lack of understanding as to how depraved Miami's program is.
